It therefore makes sense to place our qualifying bet on a horse with long odds. At the time of writing, the lay odds are pretty poor, so I’ll use fictional odds in the workings below and update the bottom of this post with my actual selection after the race.

Lay £18.21 on Desert Law @ 11.00 = Potential liability of £182.15

So as things stand we will make £5.85 profit if Desert Law doesn’t win and a loss of £2.15 if he does win. It’s not often that we are able to do this but by placing a further back bet on Desert Law, we can guarantee ourselves a profit on any outcome…
Place £0.80 on Desert Law @ 10.00 = Potential profit of £7.20
Let’s have a look at our overall profit/loss for the possible outcomes…

| Desert Law doesn’t win | £5.85 – £0.80 = £5.05 profit |
So regardless of the result of the Symphony Group Stakes and provided we are able to get some decent back and lay odds, we will make a profit of £5.05 on this York Ebor offer!
