It’s entirely up to you which horse you go for, but it would make sense to select a horse with fairly short odds in the hope of a 2nd or 3rd placed finish. Having looked at the odds on offer, I’ve opted to keep my qualifying loss at a minimum and place my qualifying bet on Awesome Power. Place £25.00 on Awesome Power @ 13.00 = Potential profit of £300.00
Lay £24.16 on Awesome Power @ 13.50 = Potential liability of £302.04
Let’s have a look at our potential profit/loss for the possible outcomes…

| Awesome Power places 2nd or 3rd | -£25.00 + £22.96 + £20.00 (extract 80% from our £25.00 free bet) = £17.96 profit |
| Awesome Power places outside top 3 | -£25.00 + £22.96 = £2.04 loss |
So if Awesome Power places 2nd or 3rd, we will make £17.96 profit. Any other result and we will lose £2.04. A £2.04 risk to make £17.96 profit gives us effective odds of 9.80. The fact that Awesome Power is 4.00 to finish in the top 3 makes this a profitable offer in the long run.
