Advice On How To Place My First `2nd Place Refund` Horse Bet

  • Hi,
After my first post here when I got some great advice I thought I`d just ask you guys about placing my first horse bet a 2nd place refund, Bearing in mind I know absolutly noting about horses.
I notice Betfred is offering Refund as a free bet if your horse finishes second in the following race: 15:40 Navan

So I went to oddschecker and looked up the race and to be honest its abit confusing but obviously I can see that theres 15 horses in the race and 2 are showing NR so I guess thats not racing so theres 13 horses in this race.

So my next question is out of those 13 horse do I simply back the one with the tightest odds and the smallest lose in qualifying or do you guys narrow those 13 horses down somehow to say 5 or 6 horses that have the best chance of winning/ coming second are you looking at the form of these horses in anyway or is your match completely based on the qualifying loss ?

    Cheers James

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

After doing so more research hows this sounding… I need to concentrate on the horses with the lowest odds as there the race favs and so as I look on oddschecker I can see the column for my bookie Betfred (just following the first example) and I can see the column for the exchange Betfair.

So the Betfred column the first horse at the very top of the column has odds 2.5 and as I go down the list the last horse has odds of 51, This column of horse`s isnt random the top horse is the fav because it has the lowest odds and the bottom horse is the least fav to win the race with the highest odds is this correct ?

And what I need to concentrate on is just the top 5 horses as they are the the 5 favs with the most chance of finishing in the first or second position and the trick is to match one of the top 5 horses in the bookies with the exchange and in oddschecker I can do this better because I can just glance from left to right looking at the bookies odds and the exchanges odds and in time I`ll get better at seeing a match and will need to use the calulator less

I should never go over a £1 lose in a big race and maybe slightly higher in a race with less horses ?

    Is that correct ??

    Cheers James

You might wanna watch a bit of racing before you start putting money on it tbh… dont rush into it

You need to open the exchange as the odds for betfair on the oddschecker will be the back odds not the lay odds which you need and may be out of date by seconds or minutes.

Open betfair or smarkets and watch a few races how the odds move close to the start of the race.

You more or less sound like you have the right idea of the process and you’re definitely getting there. More of an understanding for odds and horse racing will be helpful and will come if you watch a good few races.

For the 2nd place refunds I pretty much stuck to a rule of thumb and never backed longer than 3/1, always sticking to one of the favourites under 3/1. I had done research and 3/1 or lower horses finished 2nd 20% of their races so that will mean you hit a decent number of free bets.

Thank you very much for the advice, 3/1 seems low do you get many matches ?

Jim if you stick to the favourite or second favourite you’ll be able to find plenty of matches way shorter than that… 3/1 should be the very highest odds you’re looking for… also steer clear of races with large fields with many evenly matched horses for now… stick to 6-8 runners with a couple of stand out horses until you get the feel of things
