Doubt about moving coutry

  • Hey guys, Rui here.

I’d like to know if any of you guys that make some profit with matched betting, if it would be a good choice to move from Portugal to the UK, because Betfair is currently banned here (trying to get the licence to operate here) and we have just a few betting sites, not as much as in Britain.

I am currently a noob at this, since I never tried it because of the reasons stated above, I have 4k/5k euros and I am facing a decision of whether to keep working here and making low income or trying to go to the UK and try to make some more money than I would do here.

Thanks for any of the replies.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Moving country is a big step! Dont do it.

Betfair isn’t the only exchange around. Check out if smarkets, matchbook, betdaq, ladbrokes operate in your country. Failing that you can always try dutching your qualifying bets at another bookie. I think you can try it out at least in Portugal before doing anything stupid. Aim to make enough money for you plane ticket, a few months rents and a few months spending money. But make it in Portugal from matched betting first – that will prove at least you have a chance. Don’t overestimate the opportunities in the UK either, as there is a trend of less and less offers and less generous promotions even there. There are ppl in UK giving it a try and giving up after they realise its not free money. I see it here, ppl pop up and ask basic questions, then moan about how matched betting is dead, and then disappear. Obviously not right for everyone.

You can’t be in it for the money, because there are easier ways to make money. Be in it for the thrill of beating the bookie, or for the enjoyment of sport – and a little extra cash in your life for some luxury. (Put the earnings away in a pot for a holiday or trip, something not necessary, so that if you don’t make the money that you target there is no pain).

You may only have a handful of bookie’s in portugal (although still probably more than you think), so why not try it out there with those to see if its something that you can do. If you can’t make money in Portugal then you won’t make it in the UK either (pretty sure Bet365 operate across most of europe so that will be one of your big earners either way).

    Also consider:

Your job is permanent source of income, matched betting will last you for about 12 months.

Your job has future prospects (raises and promotions), if anything matched betting is the opposite, you lose accounts, you lose earning power. Also you will have a hole in your CV so when matched betting runs out you will have difficulty getting back into employment.

Matched betting takes up a lot of time if you’re talking about trying to make enough to live off. Probably more time that a job and you will have to work weekends for sure.

If matched betting is your sole source of income you won’t get loans/mortgages at all. Bank wont want to know you.

Match betting is not risk free – especially the advanced methods you will need to master to go full time. EW arbing for example can lose 100’s or 1000’s in one race if the back and lay lose due to a non runner depending on how much money you have on. Also human error, bookie withdrawing or changing terms and conditions etc.

You need to prove to yourself you can do it in Portugal no matter how bad the opportunities are.

Hi Rui. Moving country is not an easy thing. I wanted to do it myself some time ago. Personally I live in France since 2002 ( born in Romania) and I was thinking of moving to UK because of the gambling restrictions in France. I was a poker player, mostly online and wanted to switch to offline, London has a nice choice. First of all you need a big bankroll. And keep in mind UK is damn expensive. 5k is too small in my opinion to switch the country. You need a bankroll for your bets and one for your personal necessities – rent, food, medical insurance. 5k goes fast on a bad run.
