Smarkets – cancelled my bet

Hi,
Just advice please. I put a lay bet on with Smarkets yesterday – accepted. Went off and did some shopping. When I came back I found that the bet had been halted and the liability was very different to what I had put on . So instead of making a small profit, I actually lost £40. Apart from sitting watching the screen all afternoon, what could i have done to avoid this? My other lay bets of the afternoon with Smarkets were fine.

Not sure how that’s possible. What was the bet in question?
+0More details needed to work out what happened here but if it was football on certain matches they suspend the betting when something significant or potentially significant happens I. E. There’s a bad challenge and it looks like someone might get sent off or a penalty. Of course a goal or disallowed goal does this too.
So if you put a bet on and walk away before it is matched it could easily be cancelled.
Same with horses if you put a bet on and it isn’t matched and there’s a non runner it could be cancelled when a non runner is declared.
He last thing I can think of is if there was a non runner declared after your bet was settled they do a rule 4 deduction where they take a % this can sometimes work in your favour especially if the bookie you backed a horse with does best odds guaranteed and it’s odds improve.

you sure it was matched because if there was a withdrawal your bet would have been pulled

+0Colchester v Peterborough United. Pretty sure it said matched. My lay bet £49.36 but when I checked account status later it said Bet cancelled (Market halted) and my stake was reduced to £9 . I placed my bet 14.53 and the bet was halted 15.02. It was partially matched and then Posh scored an early goal.

Yep, makes sense. Nothing weird about that and often a good thing.
Looks to me you layed at a lower price than the going rate hoping for a match, and it did for £9 (the partial match). When the goal was scored Smarkets removes all bets/lays as the price changes so much. (Would you want to get matched at 3.5 when Posh have just scored and can be backed at Ladbrokes for 1.5?)
Only way to get around it is to lay on a price with money waiting to be matched. It’s always a gamble if you’re hoping to be matched on a shorter price.
