This policy explains what personal information Matched Betting Blog collects, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it and your rights. It covers matchedbettingblog.com, our tools (including the Oddsmatcher and Bet Builder Buddy), the forum, our newsletter and MBB Plus.
1. Who we are
Matched Betting Blog is run by Matched Betting Blog Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 10283883. Our registered office is 117-119 Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, DN31 3ET, United Kingdom.
We’re the “controller” of your personal information, which means we decide how it’s used and are responsible for looking after it. We’re registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under reference ZB249072.
If you have any questions about this policy or your information, email us at support@matchedbettingblog.com or use our contact page.
2. The information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your display name, email address and password (stored in encrypted form) when you register. Your display name is shown publicly on the forum. When you register, we also create a customer record with our payment provider, Stripe, using your basic account details, such as your email address, so you can upgrade to MBB Plus quickly if you choose to.
- Forum posts and comments: what you post, your display name and, for comments, the name and email address you enter. These are public, apart from your email address.
- Newsletter: your email address, if you subscribe.
- MBB Plus: your email address and your subscription and payment history. Our payment provider, Stripe, collects your card details, including the name on the card and the billing country and postcode, and tells us the card’s country so we can check you’re in the UK. We never see or store your full card number.
- Messages: anything you send us by email or through our contact form.
Information we collect when you use the site and tools
- Technical information: your IP address, browser and device type, and the pages you visit, recorded in our server and security logs.
- Tool use: the searches and filters you use, the settings and calculator inputs you save, any offer progress you record and how often you use the tools. We use this to provide the tools and to spot scraping or account sharing.
- Cookies and similar technologies: see section 7 and our Cookie Policy.
Information from connected betting exchanges
If you connect your Smarkets or Matchbook account to place lay bets from our tools, we store the connection details the exchange gives us, and the date you last placed a bet through our tools. We never see or store your exchange password. When you place a bet through our tools, we send it to the exchange, and we may check your exchange balance through the exchange’s own systems. We don’t store your balance or a record of your bets. You can disconnect at any time from your account settings, and we’ll delete the stored access details.
Information from other organisations
- Stripe tells us whether your payments succeed or fail.
- Smarkets may tell us whether you qualify for our 0% commission offer. If you win one of our quarterly giveaways, which Smarkets draws from its own customers, Smarkets gives us your email address so we can send your prize.
- Bookmakers and exchanges we’re affiliated with report sign-ups and commission to us, but this doesn’t identify you by name.
We don’t collect any special category information, such as health information, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
3. How we use it, and our lawful reasons
Data protection law requires a lawful basis for each way we use your information. Ours are:
| What we use it for | Lawful basis |
|---|---|
| Creating and running your account, and letting you use the forum and tools | Contract: we need it to provide the service you’ve signed up for |
| Setting up a customer record with Stripe when you register, so you can upgrade to MBB Plus without re-entering your details | Legitimate interests |
| Providing MBB Plus, taking payments and managing your subscription | Contract |
| Placing lay bets you confirm on a connected exchange | Contract |
| Sending service emails, such as payment receipts, failed payment notices, renewal reminders and important changes | Contract |
| Sending our newsletter and offer alerts | Consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
| Emailing MBB Plus members about new tools and features | Legitimate interests, with an opt-out in every email |
| Keeping the site secure, preventing spam, fraud, scraping and account sharing | Legitimate interests |
| Moderating the forum and dealing with reports of illegal or harmful content | Legitimate interests and legal obligation |
| Answering your questions and complaints | Legitimate interests |
| Understanding how the site is used, through analytics cookies | Consent |
| Measuring our adverts through advertising cookies | Consent |
| Sending giveaway prizes to winners | Legitimate interests |
| Keeping tax and accounting records | Legal obligation |
Where we rely on legitimate interests, it’s to run, protect and improve Matched Betting Blog in ways you’d reasonably expect. We’ve checked that these uses don’t override your rights. You can ask us for more detail about this.
We don’t make any decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have a legal or similarly significant effect. Our systems may automatically flag unusual tool use, but a person reviews it before we take action on your account.
You don’t have to give us your information, but some features need it. For example, we can’t create an account without an email address, or provide MBB Plus without payment details.
4. Who we share it with
We don’t sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Our service providers, who process it on our behalf and only on our instructions. These include Stripe (customer records for all registered users, and payments), our hosting, database, content delivery and security providers (such as Cloudways, Amazon Web Services, Supabase, Cloudflare and Wordfence), performance monitoring services, GetResponse (email marketing), Automattic’s Akismet, Google reCAPTCHA and ipgeolocation.io (spam and abuse protection, including checking the location of form submissions from their IP address, and, if you allow analytics cookies, identifying your internet provider so we can exclude bot and data centre traffic from our statistics), Zoho (email), and AI services that help us manage and reply to emails.
- Analytics and advertising providers, if you allow those cookies: Google (Analytics and Ads) and Meta (including Facebook, Instagram and Threads). These companies may also use the information for their own purposes, as described in their privacy policies.
- Vimeo, if you view or play a video embedded on our pages. Vimeo receives information such as your IP address and may set its own cookies, under its own privacy policy.
- Betting exchanges you connect, such as Smarkets and Matchbook, when you ask us to place a bet. They’re responsible for your exchange account under their own privacy policies.
- Our developer and contractors, who may need access to our systems to maintain the site. They’re bound by confidentiality.
- Authorities and others where the law requires it, for example to respond to a court order, prevent fraud or protect someone’s safety.
- A buyer or successor, if the business or its assets are ever sold, who would have to use your information in line with this policy.
Your forum display name, posts and comments are public.
5. International transfers
Some of our service providers are based outside the UK, mainly in the United States, or store information there. When your information is transferred outside the UK, we make sure it’s protected by an approved safeguard: either the UK government has confirmed the country provides adequate protection (including the UK-US Data Bridge for certified US companies), or we use the ICO’s approved international data transfer agreement or addendum. You can ask us for more information about these safeguards.
6. How long we keep it
| Information | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Account details, saved settings and offer progress | While your account is open, including if you stop using it. You can ask us to delete your account at any time, and we’ll do so within one month, apart from anything we must keep below |
| Forum posts and comments | While the forum and the page they’re on exist. If you delete your account, your posts stay but are no longer linked to your name. Ask us if you’d like specific posts removed |
| MBB Plus payment and subscription records | Six years after the end of the financial year in which the subscription ended, for tax and accounting purposes |
| Connected exchange access details | Until you disconnect the exchange or close your account |
| Newsletter subscription | Until you unsubscribe |
| Messages, support emails and contact form submissions | Up to two years after the conversation ends |
| Server and security logs | Up to 30 days |
| Analytics data | Up to 14 months, as set in Google Analytics |
| Giveaway winners’ email addresses | Up to 12 months after the prize is sent |
7. Cookies
We use essential cookies to make the site work, and, if you allow them, analytics and advertising cookies. You can change your choices at any time using the ‘Cookie Preferences’ link at the bottom of every page. Our Cookie Policy explains the cookies we use, who sets them, what they do and how long they last.
8. Keeping your information secure
We use encrypted connections across the site, store passwords and exchange access details in encrypted form, limit who can access personal information, and require our service providers to keep it secure. No system is completely secure, but if a data breach puts your rights at risk, we’ll tell you and the ICO as the law requires.
9. Your rights
You have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you and get a copy;
- correct information that’s wrong or incomplete;
- delete your information, where we don’t need to keep it;
- restrict how we use it in certain circumstances;
- object to us using it for legitimate interests, and to direct marketing at any time;
- move information you’ve given us to another service, in a commonly used format;
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on it, without affecting what we did before.
You can update your account details yourself from your account page, unsubscribe from emails using the link in any email, and change your cookie choices at any time. For anything else, email support@matchedbettingblog.com. We may ask you to confirm your identity first. We’ll respond within one month, or tell you if we need longer for a complex request.
10. Complaints
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your personal information, please tell us first at support@matchedbettingblog.com. We’ll acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, look into it and tell you the outcome without undue delay.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
11. Under-18s
Matched Betting Blog is only for people aged 18 or over. If we learn that we hold information about someone under 18, we’ll delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We’ll update this policy when the way we use personal information changes. We’ll show the date of the latest version at the top of this page, and email registered users about any important changes.
