There’s a big day of racing at Southwell on Friday, and you don’t want to miss this Betfair Exchange money back offer! Place a bet of up to £10.00 on the 13:00 Southwell, and if your horse fails to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, Betfair will refund your stake as a free bet. Translated into matched betting terms, this gives us a potential profit of £6.35 and here’s how…
Key terms
- Applies to our first cash bet on the 13:00 Southwell on Friday 11th February 2022.
- Applies to bets placed from 10:00 on Wednesday 9th February 2022.
- Applies to bets up to the value of £10.00 (£10.00 win or £5.00 each way).
- Money back as a free bet if our horse fails to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
- Applies to back bets only; lay bets do not qualify.
- Betfair Rewards ‘Basic’ customers are excluded from this promotion.
Qualifying bet
Please see my qualifying bets guide if you’d like more information about them and how they work.
It’s entirely up to you which horse you go for, but it would make sense to select a horse with fairly long odds in the hope it won’t finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
At the time of writing, Gossip is available at back odds of 12.50 and lay odds of 14.00.
We can calculate our lay stakes using my Matched Betting Calculator…
As you can see, the calculator tells us that our lay stake should be £8.53…
Place £10.00 on Gossip @ 12.50 = Potential profit of £109.25
Lay £8.53 on Gossip @ 14.00 = Potential liability of £110.89
Outcomes
Let’s have a look at our potential profit/loss for the possible outcomes…
So, we’ll make a profit of £6.35 if Gossip fails to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, or we’ll lose a maximum of £1.65 on any other outcome. Risking £1.65 to make a profit of £6.35 gives us effective odds of 4.85, which I’m sure you’ll agree, makes this a profitable offer in the long run.
If eligible, free bets will be credited within 24 hours and valid on any horse racing market for 7 days.
If you’re unsure how to convert your £10.00 free bet into £8.00 cash (80%), please see my free bets guide for a walkthrough of how it should be done.
* Gossip failed to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, resulting in £6.35 profit on this Betfair Exchange offer. *

Sean
Guest userHi Matt, does that therefore count as a risk-free bet?
Matt
1531It’s a money back offer this one, Sean. I’ve just added a full guide.
Adrian
Guest userThanks for this blog – it’s been really informative.
I played an alternative strategy for this, wondered what you thought of it.
Backed/Laid Papas Girl at 7.5/8 for a QL of £0.66/0.62.
Then bet £4 on it to place at 3.05.
I figured if it didn’t place, I’d get the £10 refund, and profit overall by ~£3.50.
If it did place (which in the end it did), I’d be up by ~£7.50.
Matt
1531Nicely done Adrian. You can lock in a profit like this on any money back offer that has a layable ‘trigger’. Or instead of laying the trigger, you can back the opposite as you have here.
