Yankee Bets Explained

A Yankee bet is a wager consisting of 11 separate bets across four selections. It includes 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 fourfold accumulator, ensuring that every combination of your selections is covered. It does not include single bets.

The Yankee is designed for bettors looking to increase potential returns while still having multiple chances to win. With a Yankee, you only need two winning selections to see a return. However, as with any system bet, the more winning selections you have, the higher your payout.

When choosing selections, consider the odds carefully. If your selections all have short odds, a return from just two winning picks may not be enough to recover your total stake. Incorporating some longer-odds selections can be an effective way to balance risk and reward.

Since a Yankee consists of 11 individual bets, your stake is multiplied by 11. For example, if you place a £1 per bet Yankee, your total stake will be £11. The calculator on this page allows you to either set a stake per bet or enter a total stake amount and have it calculate the individual stake per bet for you.

The Yankee bet originated in horse racing but is widely used in sports betting, including football, golf, and more.

Yankee Composition

A Yankee consists of four selections and a total of 11 bets:

Bet TypeSelection CombinationsNumber of Bets
Double12, 13, 14, 23, 24, 346
Treble123, 124, 134, 2344
Fourfold Accumulator12341
Total: 11 bets

Since a Yankee contains only doubles, trebles, and an accumulator, at least two selections must win for a return. The more winners you have, the greater your payout.

Yankee Example

Let’s say you place a Yankee bet on four horses, with a £1 stake per bet, making your total stake £11. The odds for your selections are:

Horse A2/1
Horse B3/1
Horse C4/1
Horse D5/1

Let’s work out the six doubles first. The +1 after the odds is to account for your original stake being returned.

A & B win: £1 × (2/1 +1) × (3/1 +1) = £12

A & C win: £1 × (2/1 +1) × (4/1 +1) = £15

A & D win: £1 × (2/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £18

B & C win: £1 × (3/1 +1) × (4/1 +1) = £20

B & D win: £1 × (3/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £24

C & D win: £1 × (4/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £30

Now, let’s do the same for the four trebles.

A, B & C win: £1 × (2/1 +1) × (3/1 +1) × (4/1 +1) = £60

A, B & D win: £1 × (2/1 +1) × (3/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £90

A, C & D win: £1 × (2/1 +1) × (4/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £120

B, C & D win: £1 × (3/1 +1) × (4/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £180

And finally the fourfold accumulator.

A, B, C & D win:
£1 × (2/1 +1) × (3/1 +1) × (4/1 +1) × (5/1 +1) = £600

  • If all four selections win, you receive payouts from all six doubles, all four trebles, and the fourfold accumulator, totaling £1,149. Take away your £11 stake and you have £1,138 profit.
  • If only three selections win, you receive payouts from three doubles and one treble. Which selections win will determine your total return.
  • If only two selections win, you only receive a payout from one or more of the six double bets. Your return depends on which selections win.

The odds in this example ensure that even if only two selections win, there is still a good chance of making a profit. However, choosing very short-odds selections could result in a loss if only two bets land.

Each Way Yankee

An each-way Yankee further spreads risk by providing returns even if your selections finish in place positions rather than winning outright.

Each bet in a Yankee (double, treble, and fourfold) is split into a win part and a place part, meaning an each-way Yankee consists of 22 bets (11 win bets and 11 place bets). This doubles your total stake but gives you more chances of a return.

The payout for place bets depends on the event and bookmaker’s place terms (e.g., 1/4 or 1/5 of the odds).

Pros and Cons of a Yankee Bet

Pros

A balance of risk and reward – Unlike doubles, trebles or accumulators a yankee will pay out even if one or two of your selections don’t win.

Each way variation available – By using the each way variation, you can spread your risk even further by still receiving a payout if your selections finish in place positions.

Cons

Lower payout potential – Since your stake is spread between multiple bets, the overall payout if all your selections win is lower than it would be for a lone fourfold accumulator of the same total stake.

Lower payout for fewer wins – When only a couple of your selections win, the payout may not be enough to regain your total stake.
