Union Jack Trixie Bet Explained
A Union Jack Trixie bet is a wager consisting of 8 trixies applied to your selections in every row, column and diagonal when your selections are placed in a 3 x 3 grid.
Here’s a visual representation of how your selections (numbered 1 to 9) are combined.
Each line on the grid (row, column and diagonal) represents one Trixie bet using 3 selections. Each Trixie consists of 1 Treble, and 3 Doubles covering every comination of 2 selections within their 3 selection set. This means you can see a return if only two selections in a row, column or diagonal win.
As you can see, some selections are used in more combinations than others. This gives strategic importance to where you place your selections.
- The corner selections (1, 3, 7 and 9) are used in 3 Trixies.
- The side selections (2, 4, 6 and 8) are used in 2 Trixies.
- The center selection (5) is used in 5 Trixies.
There are so many variations you could play with. For example, you could place your shortest odds selection in the center, with longer shots on the sides so that they don’t ruin as much of your bet if they don’t come in.
There are other variations of the Union Jack, such as the Union Jack Trixie, Union Jack Patent, and Union Jack Round Robin. Instead of Trixies, they place Trebles, Patents or Round Robins along the same grid lines, giving rise to even more possibilities. Since a Union Jack Trixie bet consists of 8 individual Trixies, each containing 4 bets, your stake is multiplied by 32. For example, if you place a £1 per bet Union Jack Trixie, your total stake will be £32. The calculator on this page allows you to either set a stake per bet or enter a total stake amount and have it calculate the individual stake per bet for you.
How Does an Each Way Union Jack Trixie work?
As with regular Trixies, a Union Jack Trixies bet can be placed each way. This means each individual Trixie bet becomes an each way Trixie, that covers both winning and placing selections. This doubles the number of bets to 64 because each selection is backed twice:
- One bet for the selection to win.
- One bet for the selection to place (e.g., finishing in the top three in a horse race).

Using each way Trixies increases the chances of getting a return, even if some selections don’t win outright. However, since the number of bets doubles, the total stake also doubles. You could reduce your stake to compensate, but it would provide a lower maximum return should all selections win compared to a non-each way Union Jack Trixie for the same total stake.
Union Jack Trixie Pros and Cons
Pros
✔ Flexible Strategy – Having some selections used more often than others gives great strategic possibilities within a single bet.
✔ More coverage than a Union Jack Trebles – Because Trixies include all combinations of Doubles within their selections, they cover more outcomes that Union Jack Trebles. You only need two selections to win to see a return, and it gives greater protection when your winners don’t form a complete row, column or diagonal.
✔ Added excitement – By having selections that are more or less strategically important, it can add an extra level of excitement if you are watching results come in.
✔ Risk management – Covering different combinations adds an element of risk management to your bet. If one combination of selections fails to win, you still have other combinations that could give a return. The fact Trixies contain Doubles provides greater coverage than Union Jack Trebles.
Cons
✘ Lower potential returns than a Union Jack Trebles – Since Union Jack Trixies also contain Doubles for greater coverage, they provide a lower potential payout than a Union Jack Trebles of the same total stake if all your selections come in.
✘ No flexibility in stakes – Since Union Jack Trixies place the same stake on every combination of selections, you cannot vary your stake based on your confidence in a particular set of selections.
✘ Not all combinations are covered – Unlike full coverage bets, not all combinations are covered. You could have two or three correct selections that are spread across the grid in a way that doesn’t give any winning combinations.
