A Trixie bet is a wager consisting of 4 separate bets across 3 selections. It uses 3 doubles, and 1 treble to cover every combination of your selections. It does not include single bets.
The trixie is designed for bettors who want to increase potential winnings while still managing their risk if they don’t get every selection correct. With a trixie, you only need two winning selections to generate a return. Try different combinations of outcomes on the Trixie calculator to get a feel for how your bet could play out.
When choosing selections, it is important to consider the odds. If your selections all have low odds, your return from two winning selections may not be enough to recover your initial stake. Choosing some longer odds selections in a trixie can be an effective way of balancing risk with potential returns.
As a trixie contains four individual bets, your stake is multiplied by four. The calculator on this page allows you to set your stake per bet, or the total amount you wish to stake and have it figure out the individual stake amount for you.
A trixie gets its name from a traditional horse racing betting system but is widely used in sports betting, especially in horse racing, football, and golf.
A Trixie bet consists of three selections and four bets in total. Here’s how it’s structured:
Since a Trixie consists only of doubles and a treble, it does not include single bets. This means at least two selections must win for a return.
You can load this example into the Trixie calculator by clicking here.
Let’s say you choose to bet on three horses with a £1 stake per bet. Your total stake will be £4 to cover all 4 bets that make up a trixie. The odds for your horses are as below:
Horse A | 2/1 |
Horse B | 3/1 |
Horse C | 4/1 |
Let’s work out the three doubles first. The +1 after the odds is to account for your original stake being returned.
Horse A and B win:
£1 stake × (2/1 odds + 1) × (3/1 odds + 1) = £12 return
Horse A and C win:
£1 stake × (2/1 odds + 1) × (4/1 odds + 1) = £15 return
Horse B and C win:
£1 stake × (3/1 odds + 1) × (4/1 odds + 1) = £20 return
Now, let’s do the same for the treble bet.
Horse A, B and C win:
£1 stake × (2/1 odds + 1) × (3/1 odds + 1) × (4/1 odds + 1) = £60 return
If all your selections win, you recieve all of the returns from your three doubles, plus our treble. That give you a total return of £107. Take away your initial stake and that’s a profit of £103.
If only two of your selections won, you wouldn’t get anything from the treble bet. But you would get winning a double. Depending on which selections win, you’d get a return of between £12 and £20. After accounting for your £4 stake, that’s a profit of between £8 and £16.
The odds in this example are enough to generate a profit if only two selections win. However, if you choose very short odds two winning selections may not be enough to make a profit when you factor in your initial stake.
You can also place an each way trixie. This spreads your risk even further by also giving a return if your selections finish in a place position.
The calculations for this is similar to the example above, but for each double or treble bet you have a win and place treble or double. Therefore, an each way trixie consists of 3 win doubles, 3 place doubles, 1 win treble and 1 place treble. This gives a total of 8 bets, which increases your total stake if you use the same stake per bet.
✔ A balance of risk and reward – Unlike doubles, trebles or accumulators a trixie will pay out even if one of your selections doesn’t win.
✔ Each way variation available – By using the each way variation, you can spread your risk even further by still receiving a payout if your selections finish in place positions.
❌ Lower payout potential – Since your stake is spread between 3 doubles and a treble, the overall payout if all your selections win is lower than it would be for a lone treble of the same total stake.
