Withdrawal held indefinitely

  • Hi all,

Bit of an odd one. I’ve been using SportingBet for quite a while now and never had any problems. I used to deposit and withdraw via a debit card and all worked smoothly. In February, my card got cancelled (prior to its expiry date) and I was issued with a new one. At the same time, I’ve decided to switch from debit card to PayPal to allow me quicker access to my funds.

Last week, I submitted a withdrawal request and SportingBet blocked it. They basically requested documents to verify my identity. Unfortunately though, they asked for a copy of my debit card, the one that got cancelled. As this happened over half a year ago, I obviously destroyed the old card and also do not hold a digital copy of it.

SportingBet now refuse to grant my withdrawal. I’m basically stuck in a situation where I cannot access the money neither in my account (I would just wager it once and get it into the exchange) nor receive it into my bank account.

Has anyone here every experienced a similar situation, and if so how did you resolve it? Can banks retrospectively issue statements confirming the owner of a card (I assume not)?

I would normally not bother if it was little money, but its in the hundreds :/ I do not feel like giving that to SportingBet considering they were never that profitable for me anyway.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I don’t know the answer to your question.

You mention losing to the exchange and I know you can’t access the money in your bookie account. But just to mention that would be very very dangerous. If you back and lay a long shot for a few hundred and he wins then all of a sudden you have emptied your entire exchange into an account that you can’t access!!

That phrase “lose to he exchange” should always set off alarm bells.

Echo the above comments re the exchange
Sounds like you need to ring customer services and explain the situation to them. You probably need to be clearer than “my card got cancelled”, but can’t see it being an issue if you lost it for example and can provide a subsequent card on same account

Also to be noted for those that think that account verification goes away once you’ve withdrawn once and are up and running

Love the lose it to exchange comments. If your playing that game just lay horses or outcomes on betfair every time and you will be a millionaire.

Done it a couple of times mainly if I have done a sign up offer and ended up with 30-50 quid. One time it was fine the other time got up to 200. Only did it because they both asked for documents which I had but just couldn’t be bothered to go through the computer attaching them and sending them an email.

If there is a genuine worry u will lose the money with a bookie then do not try this my best advice to the opening poster is look thru old emails see if u sent it to another betting company. Also if you get nowhere in a few emails just threaten them with a small claims court or reporting them to the gambling commission saying I have copied all conversations on live chat and emails. This has always worked for me in the past as I have always been polite up until I feel they are taking the ****

i had this recently with a bookie, i had switched banks and they wanted documents proving that the debit card on file that had originally made the deposits was now inactive and the account closed before they would process a withdrawal to my new card.

If you go into your bank or phone them, they should be able to send you a letter confirming that the card is no longer active, even if you are no longer a customer with them.

prior to getting the letter, I tried the easy way out and underlaid the full balance of around £700 on an a small arb, It ended up winning but the situation was win/win really, extra £’s for me and i stuck it to the bookie by making them process a withdrawal of 3x the amount for all the hoops they were making me jump through.

Thanks guys for your comments and concerns regarding the “loosing to the exchange” comment.

I’ve been doing matched betting for a while now and know that it rarely works, but my account wasn’t blocked or inaccessible, so I could have stopped at that point and requested the required documents. I would have only used it as a one-shoot attempt to clear the account.

It turns out that after the 10th email they finally came to their senses and approved the withdrawal!
