Costly Mistakes and Damage Control

  • I thought it might be interesting to hear some horror stories. What have been the most costly mistakes in your MB career? Where you able to claw back any losses? What lessons have we learned from having our bank roll shrink rather than grow?

I was just scrolling through my bet log spreadsheet and noticed a loss of £73 which came from jumping on what i thought was a killer arb opportunity only to find that I’d backed and layed different horses – they had very similar names and very similar odds. After the race I checked my accounts and had the kick in the gut feeling. Obviously if i’d noticed it before the race was over I’d have tried to minimised losses by backing and laying again, but such is life.

Thats probably not that bad of a loss in perspective, but I had a tiny bankroll and was only putting small wagers down on arbs. It was easily made back but knocked my confidence and hammered home the fact that concentration is fairly important in this game.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Mine is probably worst than most – I did the Bet365 offer (250 bonus, so about 200 quid profit) and blew the profit on a single lay bet when Liverpool went 2 – 0 down against Dortmund, because I was so sure there was no way they were going to score 3 goals. All for the sake of getting a tenner back..

So yeah, I did the work getting the Bet365 profit and then lost it all on a mug bet. I’ve not done anything stupid/wrong with matched betting itself yet though. The lesson I learned is: don’t get greedy. It’s easy to do when you’ve got money flowing around from matched betting.

I couldn’t get a lay on a £50 risk free B365 a few weeks ago, so made a £16 qualifying loss rather than £24+ profit. But I did a similar thing two months ago, but my horse won, so £300 profit on that. Failed to actually place a bet a few times because of not clicking confirm bet, but fortunately the lay stakes won. Fucked up the other day laying the place markets on what I thought were win markets and massive arbs. But noticed before the race and backed and layed again for about a tenner loss.

I’d say I’ve been phenomenally lucky, so hope it doesn’t hurt too much when I do eventually fuck up big.

After reading that sobbing thread I decided to pick a shortish priced horse today that I thought would front run. It did but fell at the second or third hurdle before bet was matched. Maybe should t have put £50 on it !!!
