Extra Place Arbing idea to guarantee a profit , Please share your opinions!

  • I was just looking at the Goodwood 4:20 and thought could you use the extra place to get yourself some better numbers for a arb instead of hoping your horse finishes in the extra place, which the majority of the time you’ll take a small loss.

So instead of laying on the to be placed market (top 4), lay on the 5TBP for a lot lower lay odds for a decent arb, the favorite Thesme is currently at 6.5-6.6, place odds 2.375-2.14 on 5TBP, just a quick idea not put a lot of thought into it, any opinions welcome!

Problem is that market is on betfair and no one really uses that any more

Why would you when smarkets is 2% commission vs 5%….honestly reckon if I used betfair i’d give up on arbs as the comm takes the value FACT

For the exact reason you have just stated you absolute clown, I’d happily pay 5% to trade on a place market were I am guaranteeing a profit, lay the win part at 2% to maximise profits

Just stating some facts which is something you should appreciate since you do it in every thread.
Just under £30 Arb actually, 2.375-1.79 ‘fact’

Hi betbet93. Yes that’s a good idea. Looked at it before. I tend to go for the regular “to place” market because there is more liquidity and action – no other reason.

But wherever you can find the best matches and biggest profit is alright.

I was looking at this too,I think you could use this if your lay price drifted too much on the 4 place and started to eat your profit away. The gambler in me wants one of those 5th place payouts though not had one yet but I will get one eventually!

Betbet93 – would the following work for example?

This uses a combination of bet365 C4 races (guaranteeing profit), each way arbing and extra places.

1400 Goodwood – the cashel man

Back £50 e/w, odds 7.0 on bet365 (so back odds of 7.8 and place odds of 2.5)

(Place odds currently 1/4 and paying 1-5)

Lay the win £50.13 on Smarkets for a £0.88 QL

Lay the place £64.10 on betfair (5TBP) for a £10.90 profit

Total profit of £10.02 I.e. 10% return on the original £100 outlay

Does this all add up? If so this could be replicated on each of the bet365 C4 races today.

Hi Betbet thanks for posting, I have looked into this before, and had thought of laying the win part on smarkets to minimise the cost of comms like you have done. I didn’t spend a lot of time on it to be honest with you, the problem I found was the lack of liquidity on the betfair market.

When I looked in the past it was not at the time of a large festival so perhaps when things like Gooodwood are taking place, liquidity will be much higher than usual this may well be a profitable idea. Once again thanks for posting, its posts such as this that still makes this place worth visiting every day.

@ Stanleybayor, you math looks ok, it would be useful if you could post the lay odds your doing your calcs on, I know I could work out those lay odds myself using the info you have already provided but that’s a bit too much work for a lazy sod like me.

Yeah that looks like it should work out fine mate, chance of another £50 on top of your£10 already!

The problem is liquidity yeah but as Dave pointed out with big events there is a lot more activity, i got £100 on the 5TBP yesterday which turned out to be a decent arb.
With the bigger races the market mite even increase more, let me know how you get on, lads.

@Dave_Jones good spot about the lay odds, they were 7.8 for the win and 2.0 for place at the time of writing this morning.

Didn’t get on this one as I wanted to check the maths was sound, but well worth doing going forwards.

Have most people being gambling on hitting the 5th place all the time? There’s great money in just arbing it off.

Probably works out at about same profit as finally hitting a 5th place, probably even more.
