Laying after result is known
-
Today I was able to lay the losing player (odds of 420) at Wimbledon a split second after I knew the result of the match.
Only made £2 (and the bet has not so far been cancelled) – just wondered if others have managed to profit this way from time to time?|

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

How did you know the result of the match?
After the last point?
After the umpire called it?
Was there a risk that the point would be over ruled? Or challenged? Were you live at the court? Listening on radio? Or watching on tv?
I do sometimes wonder if you’re live at an event can you get a jump on everyone watching it on tv due to lag in signal….
+0I’ve been doing the 4/1 offers with Bet365 a lot recently and noticed the live feed on the B365 website can sometimes be as much as 5 seconds ahead of ITV, the B365 feed itself is probably a couple of seconds behind the live event, so anyone at the track has a massive advantage on the exchanges over someone watching on telly.
+0@Fog there was a big scandal a few years ago about “courtsiding” where people were doing exactly that – going to watch an event (mostly tennis, hence the name) and betting online before the bookies caught up with the action. Wikipedia even has an article about it!
+0deathstar yeah I remember that. They had like a concealed clicker or something that they pressed when a point was won which went over some kind of network so they profited. Although in that case I think it was actually employees of bookies.
+0This happened the other day when the BBC app stated the full time result was New Zealand 15-15 British Lions.
I went on Smarkets & nearly backed the draw with odds of 1.10 as it was still showing as a live event.
+0FOG, about 10 years ago I used to travel to race courses to bet in running on races- betting as soon as you could say for certain a horse was going to win or place or not win etc.
It was profitable for a time but the courses didn’t like it and it became very competitive so I stopped doing it.
Regarding betting when you know a result has been declared, when photo finishes are called in horse racing, there are some crazy prices that appear on and off but having the confidence to say 100% that you know the selection has won to actually bet on them is another matter…:)
+0I have also thought about this…
Tranmere Rovers play in the National League (conference) and I always thought that surely me being live at a game would be able to quickly put a bet on after we score before the bookies have time to halt the market – especially due to it being a more low key game than the Prem for example.
Did try it once and WH counter went from like 8 seconds down to something like 2 and then suspended it. Looking back this was probably very dumb of course, but it sort of links into the conversation above!

To answers Fogs questions –
I was at home and knew the result of the match from the live SMarket feed – this was in line with the expected result from watching on the TV albeit the live SMarket feed was ahead of the TV
The other exchange was lagging behind a little and I had time to place the lay bet on! Could have got more profit I guess had I been able to react more quickly but at such high odds I started doubting myself so ended up only laying £2 when circa £8-£10- was I think available.
Tried it again on another match when I was ready and prepared but the lag was not there so nothing doing! I guess this was a one off.
Incidentally I have in the past made a few £’s on the differences in odds between football matches on the exchanges – normally just at the start when Smarkets and Betfair can be ‘out’ sufficiently to allow for some profit despite paying commissions for both back and lay across the two sites. That said this does not happen very often and it seems to be a random occurrence.
+0I’ve read about courtsiding, and sounds completely possible… But depends if u want to attend an event glued to your phone. Also have to consider the bigger the event the less opportunity there is as others will be doing it
The exchanges lag too much to close the in play markets, I’ve seen my bet matched plus a whole load more liquidity gobbled up between a goal and market suspension. You’d need some kind automation though the speed it happens in football
