My first shop arb experience
-
Decided to finally get round to giving it a go. Recently moved house and there is a Coral right by and also a Betfred.
I remember Betfred used to do quite good price boosts online in the morning were you could usually get max stakes of around £100 and make a nice decent risk free underlay or guaranteed profit. (of course i got gubbed many moons ago)
Therefore I decided to go into Betfred to the right was a massive TV Screen with all today races and in purple ‘Boosted Horses’ every race seemed to have the fav boosted so I just pulled up a stool and begun comparing them with smarkets on my phone. I’m no good with fractions but didn’t take too long to convert to decimals.
Eventually decided on Battaash which was 7/2 (4.5) and laying at 4.0. Had no clue on how big of a stake I should do so just went with £100. Stupidly i didn’t write the odds on the slip so when I took it to the woman and she gave me the slip back I queried this and she said ‘is this what you wanted’ I was like err yes can you write the odds on it I think it’s 7/2…was quite baffled at that, if I hadn’t of got her to write the odds would i have just gotten SP odds? Could have been a bit of a disaster.
Was tempted to carry on with a few more but though i’d leave it for today. Got out the shop and laid on my phone and decided to take the guaranteed £10.80 rather than risk free £43.85.
So yeah was actually quite easy, I can see how you could make a lot of money going round the shops in the morning if you had a few local. A few questions to any of you who are already doing this (sorry if they’re obvious)
1. I assume I have a few days in order to collect any winnings? (not that i’d probably wait mind you)
2. What stake sizes are best? to me I was thinking £100 was quite large but I guess the staff probably take bets like this all day long.
3. Next time i’ll obviously write the odds on the slip, I assume they’d tell you if there has been a change in odds and ask whether I still want to bet?
4. Most importantly… can they ban you from a shop!? I find it amusing thinking of an image of me hanging up and being banned haha.Cheers for the help guys 🙂

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.
Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.
Bookies are very quick now to stake restrict and effecfivly ban you from the shops… i got restricted to sp from 1 paddy shop after 1 visit… last Sat … had £50ew on a 33/1 shot that was 19.0 on the exchange… it placex… collected bet and manager had been phoned by head office to say sp only on future bets
If you back pricewise horses in same shop every week you stand out … best to go to different 1 every Saturday… stakes in shops these days on horses are poor so £100 on early prices sticks out like a sore thumb… bookies will take almost anything race to race at sp… but if you only take early bird prices and on careful ew races you will get restricted…. as someone mentioned b4 try to tip £5 here and there staff are more likely not to flag you to traders. Bookies try to monitor 20% of business these days so even £40 customers can be monitored. Good luck def worth doing thou… best time is 9am till 9.15 in freds usually have 1 huge arb for you to smash+0Ah such conflicting information from different people.
I suppose its mainly down to luck and if you get jobs worth staff or not.
Didn’t know people tip staff though ahah!
+0Thanks for sharing your experience Ryan. Sharbing is something I am holding in reserve once all my good accounts have gone. I think you will get different and conflicting advice from different people in a similar way to advice given to trying to avoid gubbings.
There are posts going back many years regarding sharbing over on the MSE web site, many guys over there make a living doing it, but just like match betting it has become much harder than it used to be.
I think if you live in a large town/city where the bookies are busy and there is a large turn over of staff you are far more likely to get away with things than if you visit bookies in small towns in rural areas where the staff have worked there for years and know by name all the regular punters.
I have read (I don’t know if this is true or even legal) but people they suspect to be arbing, their images are copied off the cctv and shared amongst other stores of the same company in the area. I have not read if they share these images with other betting companies, I wouldn’t have thought so but I don’t know.
I have also read that area managers will look out for slips with the same hand writing on similar type bets across shops in the same area looking out for sharbers. I don’t know how much time and effort is put into trying to catch sharbers, and from the posts so far in this thread it appears it depends what area you live in.
People who have mentioned tipping the staff if you have a big win is often mentioned over on mse and is something they definitely recommend you doing as staff (not manager) will turn a blind eye to what you are doing if it means they might make a few quid out of it.
A few of the posters on this site have mentioned doing the footie acca insurance offers in the bookies and some seem to be doing very well out of it, that might be something you might want to look at once the football season gets under way again.
+0@Tornado, regarding the post on the OM forums by the bookie employee. There was a poster on this forum a while back that got a job with one of the large high street chains.
I can’t remember the posters name and I don’t know if he/she still posts here, but if they do perhaps they will provide some insight into what bookies look for when trying to spot sharbers.
+0Ryan, I have a look of shop experience, the main points;
Just like online you won’t be banned but you will get restricted in what you can do. There are certain shops I can’t do extra place races any more, money back offers and even comments have been made about free bets. Don’t do the dog on it and move shops like mentioned above. Doing the same thing in the same shop every time and it won’t last long. I do mug bets in the shop too.
Some shop have profiles on customers and I know one shop manager is typing in my bets to this as well as a few other customers that are sharps in that bookie.I’ve noticed shops getting tighter too in just the last year alone. I was refused a 50 e/w bet on a 7/2 shot only 10 days ago in one high street firm. Firms also now have warnings over bad e/w races in the morning. Bets on certain events will flag up in their system sometimes.
You’ll make money doing the shops, but just like online you need to watch yourself, don’t over do it or make it obvious, and switch shops.
+0And Dave’s post above about images being taken on CCTV and pass on to the other local shops, this does happen and I know of people who have experienced it.
+0Well thanks for everyone’s input.
There are 3 betfreds quite local one in the town centre which will probably be the busiest. I did however want to cycle round them but I suppose this would stand out a guy in Lycra’s!
As said previously there is also a Coral right by etc but not sure if they offer anything other than to its ‘Connect Customers’ i’ll have to have a look.

Ryan, I live on the Wirral too (I’m guessing you do based on your Tranmere Rovers badge? :)).
I’ve never got round to arbing in shops but always been interested, from your experience so far, are the odds in shop the same as online? Also, how long are the price boosts up for- long enough to get round the 3 Betfred’s?
Keep us updated how it goes!
+0I used to, moved recently over the water though!
Well because i’m banned from betfred I never got a chance to look online, but I think based on their tweets they state Online/Shop/Mobile so im guessing they are the same. Which is excellent as I used to make quite a lot each saturday morning doing them.
I think they stay up from 9:30 till 11 so should give you plenty of time really. Obviously some don’t stick about depending upon how good they are though.
I’ll definitely go again next Saturday but this time ill watch their twitter feed to see exactly what the boosts are and compare them to smarkets before I go into the shop. As it probably looked a tad dodgy be stood by the screen and staring at my phone. Instead I can know which boost is the best and instantly put the bet or bets on.
+0All shops are different. In busy shops £100/£200 wont be noticed in others 2 or 3 £25 bets and your a high roller. Some staff don’t care or are too busy texting their boyfriend/girlfriend. Some staff act as if its their own cash you are trying to take.
And each chain/brand is different. Corals and Hills are very quick to limit you to smaller stakes (£25 ish) in fact some staff will take it on themselves to limit you. Fred does not normally batter an eye at £100 stakes, Lads are generally fine long term, but anything over £99 is auto sent to traders by the till. I usually do £80 and if I want more go back a few mins later & ask can I do another £80 (never been refused). Paddy is a joke of a bookie. You can do a 50p Acca (to check prices) then do a £25 Acca on same selections & they are cut then do the same 50p Acca & they are fine. All bookies have a PTL (permission to lay) chart instructing staff what to watch out for. Coral (and now Lads as well) use a traffic light system ;- Red (heavy limited) Amber (middle ground stakes) “all strangers/unknown customers to be regarded as Amber” and Green (high stakes acceptable).
Whether they circulate your picture or not is debatable but word soon spreads around local branches of same brand. All the bookies have “floater” staff who help out in other branches so you could walk into one shop for the very first time but a member of staff recognises you.
Fred has regular horse boosts at set times of the day and are usually better if he is “in the studio”. As for the Sat morning boosts – these are the Pricewise (Racing Post) selections and are popular boosts even with the “mugs”. Bookies have agreed to honour the prices advertised by Pricewise (the night before) for a very short period the following morning – usually less than 15mins. Coral boost theirs at 8:30, Hills, Lads & Fred at 9:00. If you look at screens behind counter you often see the “traffic light” limits at this time.
So Ryan there is nothing wrong in doing the early Pricewise selections in say Coral at 8:30, Freds at 9:00 then next Freds for 10:30 boosts then next Fred for 12:00 boosts – Lyca or not 🙂
+0It’s funny that you say Coral limit to 25. I thought they had a policy to guarantee to lay to lose £2000 or something? I can google and find some articles on it but nothing recent so I guess that they changed the policy.
+0Not sure if they changed policy but offer never said at what price 🙂 Eg if horses is currently say 5/2 they may well say £25 @ 5/2 the rest at 7/4. You can still back to win £2000 (or whatever) but at very bad value/odds
+0When I say your stake is limited – I meant at the odds u want. For example the Pricewise odds (using the Traffic Light system) may limit you to £10 (Red) – you can back more but at normal odds.
If you are a PTL customer and want to put say £100 on Barca @ 1.50 the staff will phone the traders & most likely you will get a response along the lines “£25 @ 1/2 – the rest @ 1/3”. That’s what I mean by “stakes limited”.+0Well you definitely seem to know your stuff Coffeeman, hope you’re right!
£100 stakes on all the boosts in betfred it is ahah
+0Tbh I rarely do horses except the early morning Pricewise ones.
However, Fred can be excellent on some of his Racing Post advert boost (located first page after middle normally).
They are often a football double boost & clearly state Max bet £100 (tho I confess I always multi-shop them – I think my record is about 37 shops two of us doing it 🙂 ).
They can last from 9:30 am (usual start of boost) right up to k.o. of first game. But you should ALWAYS check with MOS if the offer is still on.
15% profit on stake is not unusual, tho because there is no major league football atm picking have been slim.
However, if u are of the no-lay or underlay school of MB, my records show major contributions to my overall profit with Fred boosts but massive loses had I mugged them. I don’t really know what it is with Fred but relying on “value” to overcome variance doesn’t seem to work with Fred – all other bookies I would have made more not laying my bets. Maybe Fred knows something we don’t & is clever at pick his boosts.+0
