Smarkets liability

  • Good morning
I have had a couple of bets on golf, I am quite new to match betting and don’t really follow golf but can,t work this out

I have a bet on Dustin Johnson liability is £133.62 and Rory mc ilroy liability is £199.99 but my total liability for both = £184.24 surely my total liability should be £333.61

Can anyone work this out or is smarkets messing up?

    Thanks for any replies

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

    They can’t both win
You must have laid approx £15 on dustin.
So your worst case is £15 gain on dustin less £200 payout on Rory = £185 liability.

As betman said, it’s not possible for both players to win, so there’s no way you would have to pay out £333.61. If your lay bet on McIlroy loses, your lay bet on Johnson will automatically win.

Liabilities work on the basis of what worst case scenario is, so always the worst odds/stake combo is the total plus how many ‘winners’ there can be. Then add on your winnings from similar lays. For example,

To win – £10 on 3.0 and £10 on 8.0, worst case is the 8.0 wins so you’re £70 down but then add the 3.0 £10 lay ‘win’ so total liability is £60

To place top 3 – As above but add up liabilities of the top 3 worst odds/stake combo. £10 on 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 6.0… discount the lowest at 2.0 and you have liabilities of 20, 30, 40 and 50. Then add the £10 gain from the 2.0 so total liability is 130.
