The best mistake you ever made?

  • So last night I had £60 e/w on a horse for a bit of arbing with £18 locked in. Loaded up my bookie to see £400 in my account, spun out a a bit(thought it was a dead heat) only to look into my bet and I had backed and layed different horse at the same odds of 5.5 which only went and won! Then obviously my lay also won so I turned a £350 profit on 1 race! A really basic error which highlights what can happen as a £350 loss would of been a bit of a sucker punch.

What stupid/lucky mistakes have you made to turn a decent profit? I bet between us all we have some pretty funny stories!

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Just recently was dutching the match odds market for a football match with three different bookies to qualify for an offer on one of them. Backed the home and away result in the intended game but the draw outcome in another – it was playing at the same time and the draw odds were exactly the same. The first game was a home win and the second was a draw, so made an extra £85. But it could have easily gone the other way.

The daftest thing is I didn’t realise for about a week, when I found I couldn’t get my accounts to add up.

Tried to do the Bwin – f1 offer where you get a free bet if your driver retires. Thought I’d backed and layed verstappen at 6/1, he went on to finish but not win. Turned out id layed him to win the race but backed him to win ‘free practice’ on the Friday. Logged into my Bwin account yesterday and got the shock of my life to see £300 sitting in there. Turns out he won the free practice session. Could just have easily been the other way around. Very lucky balls up

This thread hurts after a double cock up yesterday. Firstly put an ew arb on in a hurry not realising before I hit submit that there was a non runner, taking the field down to 7. Of course it romped in third.

In an attempt to make up my losses, went to do another ew arb and misclicked the tiny ew box, placing a win only bet by which time the odds had changed enough to stop it being an arb any more, and had to take a hefty loss on the lay.

£130 down for the day overall, which having been on holiday this month was half of my profits.

An expensive lesson in why you should never place/lay bets in a hurry.

In the grand scheme of things however no real harm done. Especially seeing that recent thread with a four figure loss thanks to smarkets going on the blink.

Not MB’s, but in the mid 80’s, I was going to the Greyhounds at Walthamstow, and before I went I did a through the card 10 x Reverse Forecast doubles on traps 5 + 6 at Corals. (Not allowed to bet in your own shop 😉 )Only for 50p a bet, a bit of fun really. Went to the dogs, not a single forecast came in. (Although I did break even on the bets I made at the track)

Was about to throw away my coral slip, and suddenly realised that for some reason, that I still don’t know today, I had written Crayford on the slips. Well 5 of the 10 races came up and I made about £400.

Well chuffed with my error I was.

Well talk about a coincidence…. I placed my usual bet on the Forest game with 888 to get the free bet per goal promo. Backed Sheff Wed as the QL was lower. Somehow I forgot to lay them off. They’ve only gone and won and I’m an extra £15 up.

I’m off to buy a lottery ticket with the way my luck has been going this week. 🙂

The best two mistakes have been thanks to smarkets although its gone the other way and hurt me in the past.

First one, £25 free bet at Ladbrokes, placed it on a horse at odds of 12 and smarkets melted down. Horse won though so I was £275 up.

The second “mistake” came today in the big race. I was doing the extra place offer on Bet365 and went for Very Talented £75 each way. I layed the win part at 15/15 and was waiting for the place lay to drop to make it profitable. About five minutes before the race smarkets played up again and I couldnt lay so I did it “in-play” when the race went off but again, smarkets froze up and all liquidity was gone. I resigned myself to the likelihood of losing £75 but lucky for me, Very Talented came third so I’m over £200 up.

So yeah the best and worst mistakes are always down to smarkets. Pisses me off (even when they win).

I was on Very Talented today as well Chris. Got on at 12/12 for the win part, which makes the place odds 3.75.

Waited and waited, watching the Betfair place odds on the 5 to place market and the odds didn’t seem to come below 4.

I didn’t manage to get anything on either so just let it run. Very lucky outcome for us both.

I was also on Very Talented today.
    Struggled to lay the place.
And had the same happy outcome.

Not to jump on the Mr Talented story again but had layed the win but not the place and my internet went down, was only £20 e/w but was nice profit

Our lucky day then guys. That market was so odd, what with horses with much longer win odds having much shorter place odds than Very Talented.

High fives all around. Makes me wonder whether its a good mug betting strategy to employ i.e lay off the win part but let the place run. Depending on size of the fields, the chances of them coming in the top 3 or 4 are pretty good.

I backed and layed £100 on a arb couple of weeks back then after race realised id only backed it for £10. Luckily it lost. Also last week accidentally backed 2 horses for £200 each in same race with one click betting on a phone app. Only realised id backed the second one when the race was off. Panicked and hurriedly tried to lay it which i managed at a good deal lower odds. It ended up leading from start to finish and i got a profit of around £150. Would have been £500 if i hadnt noticed but knowing my luck itd have probably lost.

did simlar recently, backed a horse on 365 for £15 instead of £50 (the horses odds were 15 so i think thats how i confused myself) I layed it off assuming a £50 back so i would have been around £500 down if the horse had won. I didnt even notice until i was checking my account balances and couldn’t figure out why i had an extra £35.

was pretty horrified with myself and vowed to start being more careful (again)

I was on very talented too and the place odds were shite, i ended up laying £20 on 5 places at betfair to minimise losses, think i made about £8 on it. kinda wish i had let it run but it never works out when i do!
