CMA Investigation into Online Gambling

  • The Competition and Markets Authority are conducting an investigation into how online casinos and bookies are screwing over us poor ‘punters’. Press release here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/cma-launches-investigation-into-online-gambling.

They’re basically interested in hearing from people who have lost out due to being locked into complex and unachievable promotions (e.g. ridiculous rollover requirements on bonuses). They also want to know about people who’ve had their winnings cancelled or reduced after a bet was accepted, and terms restricting your ability to challenge a bookie’s decision.

I’m sure a fair few of us have experienced this sort of crap. Although you probably won’t get anything out of it, it might be worth sending them any stories/evidence you have of unfair practices. You can do so here: https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases/online-gambling. I’ve got one or two stories I’ll be sending them, and might add some evidence of stealth gubbings I’ve received just for good measure (looking at you, Coral).

A virtual certainty will be a reduction in the number of profitable promotions available, unfortunately. Greater regulation seldom leads to bigger marketing budgets.
