timj, I think you’ve got it. Maths seems right in your example. Yes that’s too big of a loss. You will have to hunt for a closer match in terms of odds. 5.5/6.4 is too big of a gap.
And you’re right. You have to be careful which tab on betfair. Usually Place market is the one but if there are non runners then betfair doesn’t reduce the place but the bookies will so you want to check that the bookie is still an extra place compared to the place market on betfair.
You can use the other 5tbp or 6tbp tabs too if they give you a closer match or just straight out arb.

How do i know if the bookie (eg bet365) has reduced the number of places if there is a non runner? Do they display this clearly on their website anywhere?
Also if i use the “5 places tab” or “6 places tab” does that then mean i wont hit a winner if my horse finishes 4th or 5th respectively?

timj, the number of places that are paid will always be displayed on the bookie page, like “1/4 odds 5 places”, they also might have a terms and conditions section clarifying how many need to run for the enhanced terms to apply.
Yes obviously if you use the 5 places tab then you dont hit a winner for 4th or 5th, but you might get on for guaranteed qualifying profit.
Might be simpler for you to just stick to the main place market – just make sure you get close match on the win odds and place odds, and make sure that the bookie is paying more places than the exchange. Not every race or horse will be perfect, takes experience and/or looking around and experimenting with the calculator.

For the WillHill 7 places it’s 14 or more runners, or 12 runners for 6.

Not sure Pavlon for B365. Probably similar, dont expect many non runners usually anyway.
The safest thing is probably lay on the 4 places market in case they reduce the places, or let the place part run unlayed. At least you cant lose at both then.

Theres no indication but even if it goes down to 4 places at 1/4 odds, still getting tons of value. I’ve actually manually reduced some of my outsider bets to four places such as Itchy Feet to 46/42, now getting 12.25/9.6 on 3 places with a chance of extra place too.
