Do any of you guys work at sport trading companies?

  • I live in London, and a quick finance job search shows up quite a few finance companies that are mainly / exclusively involved with trading sports (football, tennis, etc) markets. I have a maths background and even had an interview with a couple of them for a quant role (didn’t get the job since I come from pure maths and my knowledge of statistics and programming is next to nothing).

I’m just curious if anyone here is /was involved in that sector – given that there are a few advanced guys on the forum (mainly participating in the bad ew race thread).

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

    Hey Adio,

I’m surprised that they rejected you based on you only having a background in pure maths. I’d assume that you have at least a basic knowledge of statistics given that.

Some advice I would give is that aside from working for a bookmaker a lot of the companies in the sector are small to medium sized so it helps to come in with a rounded knowledge base and the thing that shows up the most on a cv is a candidate doing something outside of work and education. Whether that be a predictive model, trading (with sensible risk management) etc and then make sure you summarise all the skills use within that.

Regarding the well rounded knowledge base part. I know you said you don’t have a programming background but it would be really useful if you start learning a language. I recommend Python as it’s widely used, quite easy to get a start on and there’s lots of cumminity support. I would suggest if you played around with a project in Python for a couple of hours a few nights a week for a couple of months, you will get to the point where you can do quite a few things. pythonprogramming.net is a really good starting point I only.

    Hope that helps.

a20, thanks for your reply. Yes, I started looking into Python (and also C/C++). I haven’t heard of pythonprogramming.net untill now – it’s very informative.

    Cheers!
