Smarkets wins again

  • I thought it might help to pass on IBAS’s reply to my claim. I finally heard back from them and to nobody’s surprise, they found in Smarket’s favour and just quoted Smarket’s terms and conditions.

What’s worse is they never gave me the opportunity to correct a couple of inaccuracies in the information Smarket’s gave them:

Firstly, my bet was not placed in play at 15:03:39 when Smarkets were verifiably offline but was placed before the match.

Next, they state that the price odds had drifted to 2.12 at kick-off and then 2.28 I find this unlikely as other bookmakers and exchanges were offering odds of 2.0 near kick-off. oddsportal.com/soccer/englan … -zHihYHZp/

Also, the bet was supposedly cancelled when the market was halted but on watching the match I am unaware of an even that would have halted the match and cancelled unmatched bets at that moment.

Finally, IBAS claim that “The panel are satisfied that had Manchester United won the game, the customer’s balance would not have fallen from the point before he attempted his bet. The panel adjudicates, therefore, in favour of Smarkets.”

Yet, earlier Smakets claims that the bet was only unmatched because the odds had drifted and they also freely admit that there were technical difficulties which prevented customers seeing if their bets had been matched, so if we pretend that my bet wasn’t matched but was waiting to be matched by other punters then it could easily have been matched in-play without me knowing and then go on to lose costing me the liability.

To be completely frank I think Smarkets are fully aware that I placed my bet before the match started and that it was matched. Also as they know I was matched betting I am confused as to why Smarket’s would think I’d wait until the match started when the odds on the favourite always slightly drift the first few minutes.

Sadly though I know it’s my word against their’s and even though they’ve earlier admitted to me that my bet could have accidentally appeared matched and that they were offline at the time because of their terms and conditions and the weak-willed IBAS I don’t have a leg to stand on.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

At the very least please be very, very careful using Smarkets in future.

They suffer constantly from technical problems and if they do mess up it’ll be your word against theirs and as you all point out that simply isn’t good enough.

Sorry to hear about that. A few questions… Why were you laying £4.4k? Doesn’t seem to be MBing? You should be able to see the exact times which the bet was placed and cancelled via “your account” (tick placed bets and cancelled bets) – why not check there for time stamps? Have you checked the timeline for odds on Betfair? As if Betfair’s odds had indeed faded above 2.0 then there’s no way your bet would’ve been matched.

    Hi Mark,

I used to offered huge bonuses from a certain site. I.E. 25% bonus up to £1000 for example. Long since gubbed but it was incredible at the the time.

I know the times in my account history are wrong because the site was offline at the time I supposedly placed the bet and what sort of matched better places a bet of this size whilst game-play had started? No, I’d placed it before.

Finally, betfair was offering odds of 2.0 at the time I placed the bet.
