Could someone explain the difference between these two offers

  • Hi guys,
Still havent managed to find a horse with odds tight enough to back on a 2nd place refund and I`ve seen a couple but missed them.

Anyway could someone explain the difference between these two offers

    Betfred £25 Refund “2nd Place”

Paddy Power £25 Refunds “2nd to SP favourite”

I obviously understand the Betfred one but the second one confuses me

    Thanks for your help
    James

    What list, Jim?.
FoG will probably explain the technicalities of “favourite” in this instance.

    Not much technicalities involved!

The favourite is the horse most likely to win the race. He is the one with the shortest price. So in decimal odds the smallest number!

This offer you receive a free bet if the horse you back comes 2nd behind the favourite. So if you back the favourite then you can’t get the free bet.

I don’t know what list you are looking at but its always best to check the prices and the shortest price. Don’t go by top of the list! (It might be ordered by number, or even if it’s ordered by favourite sometimes if the order of favourite changes they won’t up date the list unless you refresh or something).

    Hey thanks you two !

So the favourite is the horse with the lowest number and not necessarily the horse at the top of the list.. and by list I just mean the line up of horses displyed on the bookies sites this screen shot is the line up of horses racing at 3 o clock I just thought that the horse at the top was the favoutire plus it always looks like the lowest odds https://www.diigo.com/item/image/o59j/6jgy

So when betting on these 2nd to favourite races do you have to be carful not to bet too early ? can your horse become the favourite after you place the bet ?

    Exactly true Jim!

If there are two horses the same price or close to the same price then you can give it a miss.

    Keep records of your bets.

2nd to SP is the kind of offer that you will often choose to skip a race if you think that it is going to be too tough to pick the 2nd.

If you keep records you will soon see that some picks are better value than others, some picks will earn the free bet more than others.

With 2nd to SP you are looking for races where the fav is short price and there aren’t many horses that are likely to finish 2nd.

When is favourite determined, who by?.

You can see from betting prior race easily enough, but when and how is favourite formally declared, and by whom?

See I never knew any of that ! Its just happened again I backed one and as the race was going it turned into the favourite as I saw the odds go to the lowest for the horses racing and then it locked !

Great thing is though learning like this doesnt cost that much the QL was under a pound

When is favourite determined, who by?. by the amount of money placed on it ?

You really need a firm 2nd favourite too.

Have a look on oddschecker tomorrow for PP promo and put your selections up (don’t bet yet). Maybe under the matched betting forum, not newbie. Someone will put you right.

We determine the favourite… the more money books are taking on a horse brings the price down to reduce the books liability on that horse… in the same sense the less bets taken on a horse gives a lesser liability to the books and therefore a bigger price on offer

It’s exactly the same philosophy on the exchange if you sit and watch it… back bets bring the price down, lay bets make the price drift out…

There’s also certain variables that push bettors toward a certain horse, whether it has a decent rating or well treat by the handicapper (horses may carry a weight penalty for past performance), these variables can give a good indication on potential “favourites” as early as the night before the race or in antepost (for future events yet to have final declaration)
