PayPal closed my account

  • PayPal closed my account because I’m not following rules. Apparently it’s against their rules to gamble via PayPal! So why do betting sites accept PayPal? Anyway they have closed my account I’m wondering if this will escalate any more? I’ve also used my partners PayPal to do her match betting and then sent the money over to my account for along time and hers is closed as well! Will PayPal go further with this and get other people like betting sites involved? Or am I over thinking? Anyone ever had this problem who could help maybe ?

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

    I should mention, I am not a lawyer! However…

Here’s the various legal agreements for the UK:
    https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/ua/legalhub-full

The two which would apply to us are their user agreement and acceptable use policy.

    User agreement:
    https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full
Which doesn’t list gambling as a prohibited activity. The only mention of gambling is to say it’s not eligible for reimbursement if something goes wrong.

    Acceptable use policy:
    https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/ua/acceptableuse-full
Which says they “require pre-approval to accept payments for gambling” – the implication seems to be that you only have to do this if you’re a gambling company which wants to accept payments from paypal, not being a customer of one.

Get them to tell you which exact term you have broken! If you’ve done everything legally, the only other thing I can think of is that they’ve suspended your account because you’ve done transactions worth more than a certain amount (£2.5k I think?). They have to confirm your ID and bank account etc. to comply with laws on money laundering.

All of that, of course, assumes you are in the UK!

Was just about to post the same, Burger Me. It’s certainly not prohibited unless you’re doing it in a country where gambling is not permitted.

It’s possible though that they suspect money laundering as the constant flow between gambling sites and your partner’s account may appear fishy.

Never had any issues other than the stated proving your ID once you hit the threshold and I must have put close to 10k thru them since then

I don’t think it is against Paypal’s rules to deposit to gaming sites, otherwise none of the bookies would accept it as a payment method.

When they closed your account, did they allow you to withdraw your remaining funds to your bank account? Or do you have money frozen in there?

Maybe they are suspicious about the money flowing regularly from one Paypal account to another and being used on gambling sites.

Make sure you find out exactly what they think you did wrong and stick to the same story! At least your partner who will presumably be able to vouch for you.

I must say this is one of the reasons I’ve not tried multi-accounting yet. Like it or not, there is an element of fraud about it, even if you’ve got the person’s consent.

PayPal closed my account for almost an identical reason and made it a no appeal for me. So now I can’t reinstate the account.

Has anyone tried creating a new PayPal account and have had success with that?

I saw on the Auction Essistance website that they can track two accounts through IP and limit both of them, but don’t know if that is entirely true.

They closed down my account a few years ago for some kind of eBay dispute. I just opened another one using my middle name instead of my first name, same address etc. No problems.
