William Hill Offer – The Open Championship 2017

The Open Championship 2017 gets underway on Thursday and William Hill are getting in on the action! Simply place a bet on The Open Championship 2017 Outright Winner market and if our selection misses the cut, William Hill will refund our stake as a free bet, up to a maximum of £20.00. Translated into matched betting terms, this gives us a potential profit of £15.06 and here’s how…

Qualifying Bet:

For those of you who are unfamiliar with golf, the tournament is played over 4 days, starting on Thursday (06:35) and ending on Sunday. The cut is made at the end of Round 2 in order to reduce the field. The top 70 players including ties will make the cut and play Rounds 3 and 4. Any player with a worse score than the 70th placed player will miss the cut.

If you’re unfamiliar with qualifying bets, please see my Qualifying Bet Strategy page for a walk-through guide on how they should be done.

Qualifying bets must be placed as Singles between 09:00 on Sunday 16th July and 06:35 on Thursday 20th July 2017, to be eligible.

It’s entirely up to you who you place your qualifying bet on. Having looked at the odds available, I’ve opted to place my qualifying bet on Jordan Spieth.

I like to place my exchange lay bets with Smarkets as they have great liquidity, the site is really easy to use and they only charge 2% commission in comparison to the 5% charged by other betting exchanges.

You can find The Open Championship 2017 Winner market via the following link trail…

As you can see, the calculator tells us that our lay stake should be £19.45…

William Hill logo

Place £20.00 on Jordan Spieth @ 17.00 = Potential profit of £320.00

Smarkets logo

Lay £19.45 on Jordan Spieth @ 17.50 = Potential liability of £320.92

Let’s have a look at our potential profit/loss for the possible outcomes…

Spieth wins + £320.00 – £320.92 = £0.92 loss
Spieth misses the cut – £20.00 + £19.06 + £16.00 (extract 80% from stake refund) = £15.06 profit
Spieth makes the cut but doesn’t win – £20.00 + £19.06 = £0.94 loss

So, if Jordan Spieth misses the cut, we’ll make a nice profit of £15.06. Any other outcome and we’ll have made a maximum loss of £0.94. Risking £0.94 to make a profit of £15.06, gives us effective odds of 17.02. So, given that Jordan Spieth is odds of around 5.00 to miss the cut, this is a profitable offer in the long run.

If Jordan Spieth misses the cut, our £25.00 free bet will be credited by 12:00 on Saturday 22nd July 2017 and will be valid for 4 days.
