Qualifying bet(s)
Please see my qualifying bets guide if you’d like more information about them and how they work.
Both back and lay bets qualify for this promotion. You can lay against other offers using your Betfair account and meet the qualifying criteria that way, or you can place a back bet on the Betfair Exchange and lay against it at another exchange. It’s entirely up to you which approach you take.
We can calculate our lay stakes using my Matched Betting Calculator…

14Surely it is much better (reduces qualifying loss) if you lay the bet at Betfair? E.g. If the odds were 6.0 then you only need to lay £4 to get a liability of £20.

1490Yes, it is Sam. You could just place a small bet at a bookmaker and lay it at Betfair. As long as your liability is £20 or more, you’ll qualify for the free bet. Anyone who uses Betfair as their primary exchange would probably complete this offer automatically through their regular matched betting activity.

7If you’re qualifying through lay bets keep a close eye on whether or not there’s a Rule 4 deduction before the race – this could reduce the liability below the £20 threshold. Also watch the tally of free bets carefully to ensure they’ve been awarded – I spent a total of 3 hours and 10 minutes on chat across two days with customer services to get a missing bet applied. The agents haven’t a clue how the promo works and I had to escalate the issue to a manager to finally get an admission that there is a “technical issue” with the tally of free bets.
