It’s entirely up to you which horse you go for, but it would make sense to select a horse with fairly short odds in the hope of a 2nd or 3rd placed finish. Having looked at the odds on offer, I’ve opted to place my qualifying bet on the race favourite (at the time of writing), Golden Horn. Place £25.00 on Golden Horn @ 2.75 = Potential profit of £43.75
Lay £24.47 on Golden Horn @ 2.86 = Potential liability of £45.51
Let’s have a look at our potential profit/loss for the possible outcomes…

| Golden Horn places 2nd or 3rd | -£25.00 + £23.24 + £20.00 (extract 80% from our £25.00 free bet) = £18.24 profit |
| Golden Horn places outside top 3 | -£25.00 + £23.24 = £1.76 loss |
So if Golden Horn places 2nd or 3rd, we will make £18.24 profit. Any other result and we will lose £1.76. A £1.76 risk to make £18.24 profit gives us effective odds of 11.36. The fact that Golden Horn is 1.48 to finish in the top 3 makes this a very profitable offer in the long run.
