We’ll need to place our lay bet with Smarkets as Betfair have merged with Paddy Power and are now part of the same group.

As you can see, the calculator tells us that our lay stake should be £9.19…
Place £10.00 on Melon @ 3.75 = Potential profit of £27.50
Lay £9.19 on Melon @ 4.10 = Potential liability of £28.48
Outcomes:
Let’s have a look at our potential profit/loss for the possible outcomes…
| Melon wins | + £27.50 – £28.48 = £0.98 loss |
| Faugheen wins | – £10.00 + £9.00 + £7.50 (extract 75% from our £10.00 free bet) = £6.50 profit |
| Another horse wins | – £10.00 + £9.00 = £1.00 loss |
So, if Faugheen wins, we’ll make a nice profit of £6.50. Any other outcome and we’ll lose a maximum of £1.00. Risking £1.00 to make a profit of £6.50, gives us effective odds of 7.50. So, given that Faugheen is odds of just 2.10 (11/10) to win the race, this is a profitable offer in the long run.
