I know that deathstar, I just feel completely confused – please review some of these noobie questions: I think matchedem confused me earlier saying 188 are paying more places and huntingdon and I thought you need a bookie paying more places in order to get a bad ew race? because hills are offering 1/5 odds and 1-2-3 (presumably first 3 places) on that race and smarkets are also there for the top 3 finish market I got confused thinking you need to back a horse to finish in the top 4 at wills and lay it to finish in the top 3 at smarkets? afterwards is every bad race ”good” in terms of runners or only 8,9 or 16-17 runners? and if that race is in 16;30 do I back now or? I know you are looking to lay the win price instantly and the place part 5 mins before the off btw

Right, you’ve got two different things confused. An extra place races is one where the bookie pays out on more places than the exchange, so if you choose the horse that comes in that place you win both the back bet at the bookie and the lay bet at the exchange.

A bad each way bet is one where the odds are out of line with the exchange because of the way the bookie offers a percentage of the win stake – that doesn’t necessarily reflect the true odds of a horse placing.

Matchie was talking about something else again, 188 are offering better terms on the races at huntingdon today. So where most places will be offering 1/5 on the place, they are offering a better deal. for example, you place £5 on deduce @ 21. with 1/5 terms, you have got 5 (decimal) odds on the horse placing, IF a bookie was to offer 1/4 odds the place would be worth 6 (decimal)

PS, i’m not sure where you got 4.2 from…

Isn’t the place odds calculated by diving 21 by 5 (1/5?)

think you need to read my guide again

“To find the place odds (in decimal odds), you subtract 1, divide by the fraction of odds, then add the 1 back on.”
    21-1
    /5

No 21 in decimal is 20/1 so one-fifth odds is 4/1 which is 5.0 in decimal.

In general, using decimal odds only then subtract 1, divide by 4 or 5 depending on terms, add 1 back.

    Deathstar example:
    Horse priced at 16.00 (15/1)
    16 – 1 = 15
    15 / 5 = 3 (1/5)
    3 + 1 = 4 place odds?

Ok bros I’ve backed Deduce 5EW (10total stake) at hills at 21. So now, there’s no price for the win part on smarkets and I’ve set an automatic lay at 22 if it matches soon. I can use the normal calculator on here for the win part right? Stake 5 back odds 21 lay odds 22 lay stake required 4.78? About the place part though does the calculator I’ve shared before do the work? Should do tbh

just do it as two separate bets.
so yes lay £4.78 on the win @ odds 21/22 and work out what you need to lay for the odds of 5 when the market gets up and running….

Head High won by the way 9/2.6 and laid 7.6/1.8

Nice shout couldn’t give a toss if my bets win or lose atm just want to learn the ropes. By the way for the two separate bets I can’t use the calculator on here for the price part right? Or I can do it as a normal bet?

its just a normal “qualifying bet” on Matts calc, I don’t use his e/w calc it confuses the hell outta me! I think because it doesn’t show the place odds. so yeah, treat as two different bets – first one £5@21 lay £4.78 @ 22,
then work out the place when the time comes so it will be £5@5 and lay £??? @ ???

for example if the odds come down to 4, you can lay £6.28 and make a profit of 84p whether it wins or loses. IF the odds come down more, work out the lay and earn more. Bear in mind when the time comes it happens VERY Quickly.
