Preparation for Cheltenham

  • Can you believe it but Cheltenham is only just over 6 weeks away.

I was pretty new to matched betting this time last year and felt that I missed out a fair bit as I wasn’t properly prepared. I still came out with a few hundred quids worth of profit, which wasn’t bad for a starter but could have been more.

Given what I learned from last year my advice to newbies would be:

    – Sign up to as many bookies as you can in advance
    – Try out some of the horse racing offers on a weekend before Cheltenham so you understand how to play them
    – Make sure you’ve got a decent float ready in your exchange
    – Try to get organised, and create a system to what you’re doing. There’s so much going on that it will be a hectic few days so having a plan of attack will really help you
    – Try and relax and enjoy it!

Which offers were particularly lucrative for you last year? How much did you profit? What was your biggest mistake?

I’m keen to make as much as possible this year so any tips would be welcome!

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Take the week off work like I’m doing this year. I was burnt out from working two jobs in 2016 and whilst the profits were big, I was glad when it was over.

“Which bookies had the best offers last year?”

    12Bet, 138.com TLC & Fun88

They had the best offers by far!
They tried to cause one of the biggest scandals after but they paid out in the end and folk made plenty.

Yes, I know what you mean @Chris, I was absolutely knackered at the end of it all last year!

my advice would be don’t do every single offer as you will spread your exchange too thin. pick a couple of races a day and use the fact that you get combined liabilities on several horses so use that to your advantage, only one will win so you won’t get huge amounts leaving the exchange to the bookie, instead of winning every race and skinting yourself. That happened to me on the first day last year and I had to sit the next day out while I was waiting for the cash to recycle.
Also, don’t forget to look for extra places or enhanced place terms when doing other offers. a lot of bookies randomly chucked one in last year, usually when the bookie in question was the sponsor of the race

One last piece of advise, don’t post under your real name on a public forum 🙂

Some good pointers on here already, my one piece to add would be to use PayPal to deposit and withdraw where ever possible.

I was stung last year with long withdrawl times to my bank account and found PP 4 hour turnaround a real lifesaver since.

If I remember rightly, Skybet had their loser refund offer on the 1st race every day, and combining this with the 2nd or 3rd place refunds elsewhere worked really well for me.

    Minimum £1k exchange recommended.

Does remind me I need to open some more accounts. Better to do now and very a couple bets first

Going to be a different Cheltenham for me this yr. Usually go on the tues, do bets at home wed then bet wed/thurs evening before watching races after work. No laying, just a few offers and researching horses

Looks like this yr I might be working all 4 days, so may invest my time trying to hit the offers I can with matched betting rather than looking at the horses to try and pick value and winners

I think I made about £500, but that was as a newbie and the first day was a bit of a write off as I was still figuring out what the hell to do!!!

Given the way things are at the moment I can’t imagine things will be quite as good/easy as last year.. Betfreds buy 3 get 1 free today being an example of offers on the down turn – you could only do it on place markets and other weirder markets. Skybets offers are down to £20 from £25 etc.

I’m sure it’ll still be busy, but yeah. Worth managing expectations!

I doubt there will be half as many offers on this year as there were last. To those who are asking, there is a dedicated Cheltenham thread where you can read through what went on.

I made about £600 that week which was the best week I had ever had up until recently.

I lost sky just before Cheltenham. Then lost ladbrokes and betfair during the week.

I got a lot of luck not just on the horses, the same week I hit double odds on a 0-0 draw on betfair drawing at half time promo.

Things were a bit busy so I didn’t lay everything (save time, and manage my exchange)… That worked out for me but could just also have worked against me with bad luck to wipe out my winnings from my strict matched betting. Don’t know about the week, but my final figure for the month was €2,137 which is my best since November 2015 when paddy power went nuts.

As well as good luck though I also had bad luck. I started the extra place races at Cheltenham last year and my first try missed by a nose, second missed by a length. Either of those would have been nice payouts.

So I think it’s a bit of a fair marker even though I didn’t strictly lay everything … the unlayed bets evened out to about what I would have got by laying.

One tip though is that I found the liquidity on the exchange the night before very good. So could get a lot of bets on the previous night which worked out with getting a lot of BOG too. Just too many races and offers to try and do them all 5-10 mins before the off.

What Fog says is absolutely true…so much to do you need to either (1) prep the night before (2) take time off work (3) both the above or (4) only do the best offers!

Chris interested to know why you think there will be less this year? Horse racing wise I don’t see there are any less offers than this time last year on the whole…mainly the more obvious offers like bet 10 get 10 on footi have gone. But still lots to go on and remember u have a year more experience under my wings now too

Can’t wait now im salivated at the prospect
