What made previous Cheltenham's so much more profitable?

  • This was my first cheltenham and i’m quite surprised a few on here say it wasnt as good as previous years…

Most races could get the 2 qualifiers on the 3/1 and 4/1 offers, the 1/4 odds on all races across numerous bookies was great, add in the money back 2nds and the opportunity to profit was there each day.

What made it different in previous years and how much more profitable was it?

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I was surprised to see the same too, if I had time to focus on all 4 days I think profit figures similar to what I saw banded about were achievable
I guess people who profited last yr have less accounts now. Plus there seemed a lot of big underlying and gambling from what I could gather putting people behind when favourites didn’t come in

Surprised me too I made 1.8 and only 1.1 last year. More experienced now mind

I think as bet man says it’s more the lack of accounts some people had available. One other thing is maybe the lack of bet x get x free offers…remember last year there was a few hundred on this alone (half through the 12bet et al issues)

What’s next? Aintree national meeting should be decent…then royal Ascot

Willhill and Ladbrokes both had more last year with money back 2nd.

You can see the threads from last year at the top of the forum page as well.

Betfair was back a 3/1 winner and get THREE free bets.

And like bfc mentions there were a lot more money back 2nd’s.

The offers were definitely significantly better all round.

Was also a bit more difficult this year to predict the winners/2nd places with so many many favs winning last year and so many favs flopping this year.

The back and lay odds were a lot tighter last year too, the lay markets didnt seem to move a lot this year. Bookies were giving out more price boosts to inflate the exchanges and I think they worked together to minimise exposure and losses too.

Still don’t get ur boosts to inflate exchanges point
They know which favourites they can take on, and Cheltenham throws up a lot of plenty of scope for that

Last year it was easier to make a bigger profit without much knowledge of matched betting. You could load up on all the 2nd place races online and across all the shops if you wanted and pretty much be winning several free bets per race for very little QL. This year to do well you needed a certain level of skill to churn in a good profit. E.G the extra places and ew arbing. I’ve also noticed that in the last few months it is harder to ew arb as there are more people doing it and the bookies seem to have cottoned on to making the odds less competitive. The over round this year from the morning onwards was ridiculous when compared to last year.

Also I think the results on the first 2 days were unfavorable to matched betters.

I made about half of what I made in previous years. A combination of what everyone else has said – – – less generous offers, unpredicatble results (in big fields) and probably the biggest thing for me was the difficulty in getting close matches.

Maybe as the festival has been made into a much bigger ‘thing’ for the casual punter the bookies don’t need to be as competitive, but some of their odds were criminal.

    Last year I didn’t have a clue.
This year I made twice as much and spent half the time.
If I had chelts off I would have hit at least £1.5k instead of £400.

Offers were not as good this year

Soon as I saw this thread i straight away said better offers…

As others have already pointed out ladbrokes/WH/Paddy & Betbright ALL did MB 2nd. So being able to cover a lot of horses in each race provided a hell of alot of free bets.

Also the obvious less accounts this year
