Bookies paying 8 places on the Masters (Golf)

  • Sky Bet and Paddy Power, any more?

Thought on the amount of players it would be “reasonable” to back at each bookie?

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

    WillHill – 8 places – 1/5
    Bet365 – 8 places – 1/5
    StanJames – 7 places – 1/5
    Coral – 7 places 1/5

I posted this in the other Masters thread, hopefully nobody minds me asking it here as well.

How does the ‘dead heat’ rule work with the bookies and betfair?

If using Sky’s 8 places offer and BF’s to Place 8 market there are loads of EW arb opportunities.

The only two issues I can see are dead heats and the size of my bankroll!

Are the rules treat the same for both bookies, does it make a difference to the EW arbs?

How do we play this. Do we simply lay these off on the betfair top 8 market.
Also what happens if the players are tied for a position, before we start the ball rolling on this ?

No mate, place an each way bet with the bookie, lay the win part off and lay the place part off on top 5 finish (better to use Smarkets=less commission). Then hope your selection finishes 6th 7th or 8th, if he does, the place part of your bet wins at the bookie and the exchange=profit.

Tied position, good point, I assume both players would get paid out, the same as in a tied horse race?

Betfair rules seem to be same dead heat rules
Different approaches Steve, you could do yours and aim to hit the place or you could lay on one of the more place markets for lower more guaranteed return.

Have had a quick look at the market this morning. No value there at the moment. For instance Speith is 8.5 and laying for 9.8 and place lay is 2.22. So dim profit there.
Will keep an eye on it mind.

Most of them in the 20/1 – 80/1 range are EW arbs. I counted 10 at a minimum.

Just concerned about the tie rule.

Nothing to be concerned about. Dead heat rules are the same.

So if a golfer is tied the profit will just be reduced?

There’s no scenario (like a non runner in horses) where we can lose at both the bookie and the exchange?

    Ok so…

    This looks like a good one Sky’s 8 places @ 1/4 odds –

    Bill Haas – 101 / 120 & 26 / 12 – £20 ew guarantees £17

Has anyone discovered whether the dead heat rules are different between Smarkets and any of the bookies offering extra places? Just trying to avoid too much duplicate effort.

Profit won’t be reduced, bookies will payout on both players, your lay bet at the exchange will lose.

Nah i don’t think your profit would be reduced.

Using that example you gave 26/12 on the place.

    Lay 43.51
    Liability 478.66
    Profit £21.34 after comms.

Say Haas ties for 8th with another. You have half staked winner at sky. So £260 return. +£240.

Betfair you would win half of your lay so +21.75 and lose half of the liability – £239.33. Overall – £217.58.

    Profit £22.42.

So you would be slightly better off with only paying half of the implied commission.

Thats not always the case steve on losing. If its tied 6th or one of the extra places then bookies pay out on both BUT they will reduce the pay out. A few examples below:

    1) MR FACT finishes 6th, alongside 2 other golfers. You have bet with a bookie paying 8 places, so you get the full payout as expected
    2) He finishes 6th alongside 2 others, yet the bookie you have bet with only pay 6 places. They will therefore only pay a third of the money to you….still decent as the excahnge bet lost but they dont simply pay out fully on all golfers
    3) Just to complicate matters further at the next event MR FACT finishes joint 4th with 3 other golfers. The bookie you have bet with are paying 7 places, therefore 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th are contained in those 4 players and u get the full payout. On the exchange your liability is halved though as they only count 4th and 5th, meaning u in effect get half profit

In summary there isn’t anything to worry about in my eyes other than the math you may have to do on Sunday night. And if MR FACT can ever get a top 3 finish

To avoid confusion my post to Mwilks was with regards the 8 to place market on betfair which is exactly the same terms as skys 8 places. So arbs wouldn’t reduce in profit.

Matchedem correct regarding the 5 to place vs bookies extra places.

    Thank MBPunter.

Think i’ll underlay a number of golfers so that it opens the whole of the top 8. Rather than trying to catch 3 places for Extra place method.
