betfair exchange trading

  • just a quick question about betfair trading;
    i’ve not done any and my knowledge is limited i was just curious, so the idea is to back high and lay lower to get a profit, so, could you not look at the exchange now, the day before a race and then compare it with bookies odds; so for example:

    at the minute the horse compadre for the 1520 at huntingdon is currently backing at 8.8, if i look at the odds on william hill it’s got it at 4.5, the favourite horse, so i’d expect the odds on the exchange to drop over time, if i backed it at 8.8 on the exchange and the odds had dropped in the morning so the lay odds were around 5 i’d make a guaranteed profit?

    second question some horses back odds start at 1000 can these not be backed at this point as the lay odds are always going to be lower when people start putting money into the exchange?

    like i’ve said i’m just curious and my knowledge is extremely limited so if this is way off then can someone correct me.

  • New to matched betting?

    My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

    Normally if someone is trying to back a horse at 1000 on BF pre race, you wont find anyone willing to lay at that price. So the backers money just sits there hoping someone will come along and lay their bet, but it doesn’t usually happen.

    Regarding you question about backing on the exchange when the price is much lower at the bookies, yes this can sometimes work, but often you will have to trade out at a loss. Some people (usually very good form readers) can do this for a profit, but its a lot of hard work and not something that is profitable for most people.

    Why not paper trade this strategy for a few weeks and see how you get on, its not going to cost you anything but time, and I am sure you will learn a lot from the exercise.

    BTW I don’t think your questions are silly, but you have to realise there are no easy ways to make money from trading on the exchange, they all need hard work and a lot of experience. Good luck and don’t worry about asking any kind of match betting or trading question here, were are all hear to learn.

    Jonh are you sure you are looking at the right numbers. Are you looking at the lays?

    I don’t believe any horse is there available to back at 1000. And also unlikely that you can back the fav at 8.8…..

    I would suggest you Google, Caan Berry, and have a look at his trading video’s, he’s been a professional trader for years and has featured in Betfair adverts. I use a combo of scalping and swing trade, it’s not easy to master and you can blow you bank without self control!

    Just to let you know guys, I’ve just added a trading guide to the main menu above, which has been kindly written by Professional Trader, Caan Berry…

    I appreciate it won’t appeal to everyone but some of you guys may find his insight useful.

    Hi Matt,
    I have just made a comment on the trading guide you have referred to. I am happy to see that new section, and it would be good to get more discussion going on trading.

    If anyone is considering giving trading a go however I would suggest you have a quick read of the comments I have made. Trading is a lot more difficult than match betting, and just because you have made good money match betting, does not mean you will do equally as well when it comes to trading.
