Getting close odds

  • I got several free bets of £10 each but am really struggling to make more than £6.50 profit out of them. Everything I look at, the Betfair lay odds are so much higher than the bookie’s back odds. I don’t have access to the Internet all day so I am placing my bets early in the day and am sticking to football, which isn’t great at the moment because it’s just internationals. Any advice – should I leave my bets until closer to the match to see if the odds narrow. Or would I even be better waiting until half time. The advice is that you should comfortably be able to extract 75 to 80% profit but I’m well short of this so it’s quite disheartening?

Thanks in advance for any advice

What sort of odds are you backing at? For SNR free bets the higher the odds the better.

Horse racing tends to be better for this than football as outsiders will be priced a lot higher on the exchange than the bookies. Odds on horses are a bit tighter so it’s normally quite straight forward to find a decent match e.g. 8.0/8.5 will see you return 70%-80% depending on your exchange commission.

I find getting close arbs on the horses a gamble in itself!

I’ve been stung before by backing a horse and then waiting for the odds to lower on Smarkets only to see them rise.

Other times it’s gone the other way. Backed a horse and layed for a loss and then got cheesed off as the Smarket odds have reduced.
