Guide to Each Way Betting (with Q+A)

  • With Cheltenham coming up, I’ve decided to write this guide and the subsequent thread to hopefully stop other threads getting hijacked by E/W betting. So all questions in here please.
I’ve deliberately put this in the matched betting forum instead of the newbie forum because I don’t see it as a newbie skill. No offence to any newcomers, but there really is a knack to this. You have to be very confident with horse betting before you do this because if it goes wrong, it can go VERY wrong. You have been warned. Also, this needs quite a big float (1K+) so if you’re just starting out, look away now.

Each way betting is used for two main reasons, when there is an extra place race and when there is what bookies call a “bad each way race”
hopefully you have read Matts guide to extra places
    https://matchedbettingblog.com/extra-place-offers/

but i’ll quickly go through the basics. First things first, When you place the bet you will notice that double the stake is taken. This is because when you bet each way you are actually placing two bets, one to win and one to place. Once you have placed your back bet, you now have to place TWO lay bets, one to cover the win part and one for the place part. Obviously, the value of each is half of your original back bet. You need to find the terms of the race and find out how many places they are paying, and at what fraction of odds. This is usually clearly stated.

To find the place odds (in decimal odds), you subtract 1, divide by the fraction of odds, then add the 1 back on.

Lets take Gubstar, who’s being offered at 16/1 with 1/4 place odds and 3 places.

    16/1 = 17 decimal
    17-1 = 16,
    /4 = 4
    +1 = 5
so the place odds for Gubstar is 5.

just to be redundant, here’s a harder one

say he’s going off at 11/4 and its only 1/5 odds

    11/4 = 3.75 decimal
    -1 = 2.75
    /5 = 0.55
    +1 = 1.55
so now his odds to place are 1.55

Now you know the place odds being offered you can easily compare them to the exchange and lay accordingly.

Doing an extra place race is pretty straight-forward, find a horse with close odds, back, lay, hope! Its usually much better to do several horses over several bookies for these offers to increase your chances of hitting the extra place. Don’t forget, most gubbed accounts can still do the extra place offers.

To take advantage of a bad each race (E/W arbing) you have to understand how it works. Basically a bookie will offer very short odds on the favourite, and unfairly long odds on the others. That is fine on the win market, maybe the other horses really don’t have a chance (especially Gubstar), but because the other horses have a very good chance of coming second or third, by offering a fraction of the odds for the win, the numbers just don’t work anymore. Therefore the odds offered by the exchange are a much truer reflection of the odds on a horse placing, and much shorter than the bookie offers by default because of the combined nature of the each way bet. I hope that makes sense.

The things to look for in a bad each way race is a very very short favourite (about 2.8 and below), a couple of hopefuls (around 4/1ish) and a few complete outsiders (100/1+)

There’s a couple of ways to play these, either back and lay straight away, or you can back early and lay much closer to the off. The price almost always comes in sharply around ten- five minutes before the race and it takes nerves of steel (again not for newbies). You can also choose to fully lay to guarantee profit, or underlay to win more if you place and break even if you don’t.

The problem with this approach is the danger of non-runners, which are two-fold.

First, the bookie will apply “rule 4” which is where they will cut the odds AFTER YOU HAVE BET to take account of the fact there is less competition. This is fine if you have backed and laid at the same time as the exchange will recalculate as well. But if you haven’t, you need to take account of the reduction and lay accordingly. (the bookie will usually list how much they have reduced by on the race page). You can imagine the havok this causes when it happens 3 minutes out and you haven’t laid. It can save a lot of trouble to just underlay when this happens and hope you place.

Second problem is when you have a race with the number of runners on the threshold of the place market rules. A race of more than 8 will pay out on 3 places but if one or more horses drops out and the number of runners drops below 8, the place odds will drop to 2 BUT THE EXCHANGE WILL STAY THE SAME. I assume this is because people have bet on where it will place, so its not the exact same market. Similarly for a race with 16 down to 15 or less.

    Handy guide to places:

Handicaps of more than 15 runners 1/4 4
    Handicaps of 12-15 runners 1/4 3
All other races of more than 8 runners 1/5 3
    All races of 5-7 runners 1/4 2
All races of less than 5 runners – win only

    When things go wrong.
Betfair have various markets for various places, and even an each way market, so you might find a lay that is not too much of a loss should things go wrong. You can also keep an eye on what the horses SP will be and hope for a favourable BOG (possibly). Some bookies offer cash out as well.

i do both wo 1 fav and 2 favs ,yes i spread my bets but 365s algorythm is way out on these markets sometimes in the example race 3rd in 7to2 with all runners 1to50 wo 2 favs thats very strange imo, oddschecker at the ready i have a few bookies open on my lap top ready.THE 345 lingfeild tomorrow looks interesting wo 2 favs lads could be a punt i will update in the morning,,the none runner situation is the interesting one ie
11 horse race i have backed them all wo the fav ew and the one i dont want 2 places on bf then you really want a none runner to get some initial stake back .
the time it becomes nervy when you do wo 2 favs with 6 remaining the bets on and theres a late none runner so then you need the 5 left to start you can still get out if it goes down to 4 by backing the one you dont want 3 place only for a loss though in that event but not much becuase you have 2 initial stakes back.
ive had it where the one i dont want can we nickname it the baddy so i dont have to keep typing lol.becomes a none runner you usually end up level.
you chaps will have to bare with me im shocking with grammar and spelling but brilliant at maths so i hope what im trying to say comes across ok ..get bashing them dam bookies..also paddy power have just restricted me to 1 or so ew so i have no chance of making anymore cash but i will help as many as i can make few bob.
something else to remember ive been gambling for 30 odd years and i have never seen in any betting market in all that time on any sport have such variance in prices as the market i targeted

Soz I meant are William hill the only other bookie to offer this market…
As this needs spreading as not to get restricted within a couple of bets..
Yes I know you win big but no good losing accounts as you can make continuous money each week not as big but every little helps…
But going to give your bet a try as too good not too…
Just let me know what to back and what bookies…
    Cheers

also remember dont even look at the form its irrelevant its maths and numbers, also sometimes i would be willing to take a small loss on a race if i had a chance to win big.
for instance i would take a chance sometimes if my outlay was say 550 and 500 return if the baddy foils me but i had the rest of the feild on my side to make me 500 to a 1000 i would sometimes do it becuase for me in my way of thinking the odds were still big in my favour because the race only has to come in 1 in 10 for me to be in profit and overtime in these circumstances i would roughly guess it was a winning race for me around at lest 6 times out of 10.

But you could put the loss that could happen on the baddie to place on bf…
If he places then you win there and that helps the loss and if he doesn’t place you win the bigger money minus what you put On The baddie on bf….
Look forward to what you would do in that race 2moz….
And which bookies to use to spread the bet…
Bet365 and William hill are the only ones I guess!!!!

yes only hills wo 2 favs quite a few do ew wo 1 fav, looking back i made a big mistake a few times i would back them all win wo fav on a 93 percent market to make 70 for nowt not sure it was the best thing to do…do i have regrets not on your nelly it was brilliant while it lasted a fantastic rollercoaster.
what i havent mentioned is before i started doing my system i was a 2 ew man or even less the odd fiver bet the ocaisional 20 30 40 50 on footy or a 10 ew on horses if i got a tip i have a mate who is in with the r ford stable and i get good info on some of there horses,,so in reflection i went from 1ew to sticking 2000 on in a matter of months no wonder ive been resticted lol..like i said my mind set was hit them hard while i could, just for instance say i only did small bets on my market won consistantly say 2000 up and they then restricted me i would of been gutted then

Looked at all the races 2moz and only the 1 you mentioned…
How do you work out the percentage market without the favs and if it’s worth it?

    +0
    dungpoodle 0

put your bets on ew wo 2 favs it will be 1/4 the odds 2 places,,,bet on each horse enough ew to get 10 pound back if placed see how much the outlay is and see what price you can get on the baddy 3 places only or see what price hills go the baddy without 2 favs ,,add up your outlay say its around 22 pound to 25 pound to get cert 20 back then i would play dont work the win part of the ew bets unless one of our horses is under 4to1 as if this comes in you wont win much because your baddy may come 4th but on the other hand one of the favs might win one of your winners comes 2nd and the baddy comes 3rd to get your 3 place only bet up aswell,,,once you have done it a few times it will become alot easier

    +0
    dungpoodle 0

also if the outlay is under 20 and you get 20 back regardless the out come then me personally would put alot on a race like this,,bed time now i will post in the morning my way i would do it if the race fits.thats with covering the baddy included

    345 ling
    no3 3.25 ew
    no5 1.25ew
    no6 1.25ew
    no7 1.25ew
    no8 2.25ew
now thats a 18.50 layout up to now wo 2 favs,,,our baddy cloud dragon roughly 1to4 3 place only on bf so thats another 8 outlay ,so thats 26.50 outlay altogether to 20 back,,would personally like our baddy to be long john silver as its unraced,,,might be worth waiting abit to see if our outsiders drift to decrease our loss percentage,,up to you guys ,,,thought id post anyway to show you my methods..lets see what price hills go wo 2 favs on cloud dragon win only when they offer the market i would wager its a lot better than 1to8
