I’ll be in the US for a few weeks, just wondering if I can place bets on UK bookmakers without looking suspicious? I won’t be using a VPN etc, just cellular/3G and WIFI.

You would need a vpn. Definitely won’t work with cellular data or wifi. Don’t think any bookmaker operating in the UK has license to operate online in US.
I’ve just got back from living in Grenada in the Caribbean for 2 months. Managed to take part in Cheltenham offers using a VPN (I use Private Internet Access). Weirdly, Bet365 wouldn’t work whilst the VPN was enabled, but worked just fine without it despite me having a Caribbean IP address. As far as I remember, the rest worked through the VPN.
You may well find some will work. I went last year for a week and pretty sure i checked a couple bets without using vpn.
It’s not like you’re trying to register with them from there, just depends on their policy re country access.
