Cheers FoG. Love these WH 2nd places. Won bugger all on the horses today but came close every time. When picking a horse to hopefully come 2nd what are people’s thoughts? Pick the favourite or a close favourite?

I picked 2nd favourite both times today and both failed. The favourite would have come 2nd in one of them though. I’m leaning towards picking the favourite as it’s less impactive on my exchange if it wins, but it does have a good chance of coming second also….

Depends on the odds each race is different…if there is a heavy favourite but then a second whose odds are fairly short and the rest donkeys go for the 2nd fav obviously. If there are only two who are pretty short and the rest donkeys then go either or…there is no definite answer as to if you should pick the fav or if you should pick 2nd fav, or any other horse for that matter. Also need to take into qualifying loss, usually you can accept a higher qualifying loss on a horse with shorter odds, but then again if you get a really low qualifying loss on a horse with high odds probably pointless as the chances of coming 2nd is very unlikely. So yeah no answer to your question too many factors.

I find the WH races are good because there always seem to be 2 horses way more fancied than the rest which makes picking easier.

You’re right Ryan, I was over simplifying the choice. I suppose be guided by the qualifying loss if they’re all much of a muchness as it’s a lottery at the end of the day!

Hopefully a better day on the horses tomorrow…….

Mark corrigan had a nice post about calculating the value of the horse based on his win odds and his 2 place odds on the exchange. Doing this you can estimate the probability of coming 2nd and weight that up against qualifying loss.

As a rule of thumb though I think favourites are more likely to be 2nd than the 2nd fav. And also you can get a boost from BOG if your horse wins instead of 2nd.

But as Ryan says if then fav is 1/2 the 2nd fav is 3/1 and the rest of the field is 20/1 then obv go for 2nd fav.

Yes, that’s what I was getting at FoG. The favourite has a higher chance of placing than a second favourite.

I took Padddy’ss gubbing to heart… so I’ve been doing the horse offers in store this week. Cleared over 100 in last few days, very easy too, just go in and pick out the suitable races with a havy fave or else with few runners. Match in store or match later.

What you got now Paddyy??? :-)
