I'm still confused about risk free betting?

  • Sorry if this has been asked before, I’ve read through the guides and searched the forums but I’m still confused. In the guide for risk free betting, Matt talks about an 80% cashback mentioned in the free bet guide, but I don’t see how this relates to a risk free bet? Surely the cashback would be 100% as that’s the whole point of a risk free bet? Also, it seems like he only talks about placing the qualifying bet in the risk free betting guide section, so I’m still quite confused as to what I’m supposed to do. I’m sure it is very clear and I’m just overlooking something, but I am quite stumped.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

With a risk free bet, the bookie gives us our stake back as a free bet if it loses. Therefore we want to treat our first matched bet as a stake not returned free bet, so that if it wins on the bookie, our liability will not be as high as it would be from doing a normal qualifying bet. The profit will be in the bookie account. If the bet loses, we would initially have incurred a loss, but we then have the free bet to use to gain our profit. You could extract 100% from the free bet but that would be when the back odds are quite a bit higher than the lay odds, also called an arb. Very likely that would draw attention to your account as the bookies hate arbers and will close you down quickly if you do it too much.

The cashback feature isnt necessary but it allows you to enter a figure that you would expect to retain as cash from the free bet, normally 80% is achievable but you can get more or less, it all depends on the odds.

As long as you understand the concept of placing the first bet as stake not returned, knowing that you then have to use the free bet if the back bet loses, you don’t actually have to bother with the cashback option. Some people prefer it but I just treat these as a standard snr because i never know for sure how much of the free bet i will be able to extract.

    Hope that makes sense.
