Matched betting calculator – math

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me.
Is there anywhere which describes the math for the matched betting calculator? I understand how to work out a lay and a stake bet, but how does it work out the optimal configuration?
Part two of my question and why I am really asking Is there a tool which does the calculation backwards, as in rather than fixing the stake, you can instead select the lay amount, or is there a tool that already does this?
