My first closed account
-
Today I got the dreaded email telling me I’ve got my first closed account. (not even restricted stakes, just fully closed). The culprit Mr Stan James. Havn’t even had the account a month.
Ok, I’ve had a nice run of free bets from him with his predictor comp. (Came 6th one week), and a couple of wins, so I’ve taken about £80 odd from him. I chucked in a few mug bets, for £10’s and £20’s, (one won), placed another one today on an 8/1 shot, (try to keep my mug bets to 3rd or 4th favourite), and by all accounts I’m totally shut down because my account has been………”reviewed on a regular basis by our Trading team, and due to betting patterns on this account the decision has been made to close it.”
Not sure how they can ascertain betting patterns from 11 bets in total in a 3 week period. When I was a bookie, we recorded bets of certain punters for a three month period before head office would make a decision on banning or restricting a punter. Obviously they are a bit more skittish in today’s market.
Oh well, sad to lose SJ as the predictor comp was a guaranteed free £5 bet, but life goes on. Hope my outstanding bet with him wins, and I take another few quid from him before I go.
No doubt there will be a few more over time. 🙂

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Yep Stan is real trigger happy with the gubbings. Lost mine very quickly.
+0Ahh Stan James…My first gubbing. What a crazy week that was…NOT. Got me after about 3 bets.
+0SJ is well known on the MB forums for having one of the fastest gubbing trigger fingers, possibly only second to racebets in how quickly they gub you. You should find that most of your other accounts last a fair bit longer.
There tends to be two schools of thought on gubbings (there is a thread on this site somewhere about it), one idea is to go slow do plenty of mug bets and over time take money off the bookies. The other idea is to go flat out from the start, do huge arbs and try and take then for as much as possible as quickly as possible before you get shut down.
I think the latter option is probably the most profitable, but I think it also depends you your personality. I tend to be more cautious in my approach and try and take money slowly from them rather than blitz my accounts over a few days.
+0Haven’t had any accounts closed yet. But Betway followed by Bet Victor were the two who quickly told me no more bonuses.
Betway did me after 3 bets and two of them were the QL and SNR freebie. Didn’t even have a chance to make any mug bets.
+0SJ are a bookie in name and name alone.
+0Didn’t take long for the second one to turn up. Gubbed by Boyles today. No more promos or free bets. Looks like I’ll be using them to arb whenever appropriate.
They say things come in threes. I wonder who will be next. 🙂

Once a bookie gubbs you it doesn’t usually take them long to restrict you to pennies if you start arbing them. Some even arb you and restrict you at the same time but don’t tell you that your restricted. Some people who like to lay first and back second have found this out to their cost, its surprising how many MBtors don’t realise they could back on the exchange for limited loss in this situation.
+0Just remembered something (not 100% sure about this) but SJ and Boyles might be linked think I may have read somewhere that a gubbing on one of them usually leads to a fairly quick gubbing on the other. Does anyone know for sure?
+0Took BFSB up on there Gems gone wild arcade promotion won £5 risk free and won £280 yesterday, been gubbed today having also placed a bet on their Ryder cup offer yesterday. I still have their top scorer offer running running from the start of the season. Will they stop giving me free bets or is that out the window now? if so I will cash out for the profit.
+0Strange… I’ve had my Stan James account for about 2 years and still qualify for free bets and offers… I’d also be interested in the criteria they use for gubbings
+0Back a horse at odds that end up beating SP by more than 2 pts, that usually does it 😉
+0Stan James gubbed me after a handful of bets. Sneaky fuckers. In midweek they sent me an email offering me a free £5 bet and all i had to do was stake £5 quid offer lasted till Sunday.
I ignored it, on the Friday they sent me another email. Saying £5 free bet still available but hurry you only have Sunday to use it.
So i took them up on their offer. Placed the bet and surprise, surprise i get another email. Saying we review accounts from time to time and i am not entitled to any more free bets, BOG, etc, etc.
