Newb question :)

  • Hey there.

I wanted to try MB. Therefore I read everything I could find here and found it to be pretty helpful.

So I created a betfair account and another one with a different exchange, to claim that 20 risk free bet offer by betfair.

Unfortunately this was my first mistake, as the exchange is not available outside of UK.
Nevertheless I had already placed and layed my bet.

After realising my mistake, I tryed to calculate my potential losses and came across something I really don’t understand.

It is a 4.5 back, 20€ bet. Putting that in the Calc it states that with a lay of 4.75 I have to place 18.21.

So if lay wins, I’d be looking at a loss of 1,80€, which is fine. What bothers me is, if the back bed wins, the Calc shows that Id get 66,50€ in winnings, but loose like 68,20€. But on betfair it says I’d get 90€ if my bet wins (4.5*20 probably) which sounds more plausible to me. (but that would mean an overall win of 22€-comission?!)

So why is there such a big difference between the Calc and the bookie, and why am I still able to win my calculated amount if the back one wins, despite my mistake?

I’m thankful for every Reply, as I really want to learn how things are going.
    Best regards and Happy betting!

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I think the calc isn’t including you getting your stake back – which is 20 + the 66.50 winnings so 86.50 total return ….

That was my first thought as well, but that would meant I’d get a loss of ~1,80 if my lay wins and +18 if my back wins, which is Probably flawed..

Stuck your figures in the calculator I use…

    20 at 4.5 Back with 4.75 lay and 5% commission;

Need to lay 19.17 at 4.75.

Net loss if back bet wins = -1.81
Net loss if lay wins = -1.81

Edit just realised the 18 you are getting back in your above post is the original 20 less 2 so you are either 1.80 or 2.00 down overall…
