Newbie question about opening Betfair account and first Coral qualifying bet

  • Hi I’ve been reading as much as I can on the blog and am almost ready to get going. I just have two questions.
    1) When I go to open the Betfair account to use the exchange, I’m offered a welcome £50 free matched bet. Can I use this if I’m using Betfair’s exchange to place lay bets against myself? Or do I just treat it like any other site’s welcome offer?
    2) Taking the opening Coral offer of four free bets, the guide tells you to repeat the process three more times after placing the first of the four bets. Am i being really stupid here, does it mean place the same bet four times in all or do you have to place four different bets?
    Thanks in advance.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

    1) You don’t want to lay a Betfair Sportsbook bet on the Betfair Exchange. Either lay it on another exchange (smarkets etc) or you could dutch it with another bookmaker.
    2) It doesn’t have to be the same bet (but it can be).

Thanks. What do you mean “dutch it with another bookmaker”?
Also, reading through the matched betting guide, it says you get a free exchange bet with Betfair on signing up, risk-free, up to the value of £20 but when you go onto the Betfair site it says this is only for bets of £20 or more. Looking at the first example onthe matched betting guide we’re placing a lay bet of £5.07 on the Swansea v Man Utd example so am I correct in thinking this wouldn’t qualify us for the free £20 exchange bet?

Dutching means betting on all possible outcomes of an event.
A simple example would be both teams to score ‘btts’. With one bookmaker you’d bet on btts – yes and with another bookmaker btts -no. You’d want something with higher odds for your freebet though.

The Betfair exchange offer – The terms state that it has to be £20 or more, so yes you’re correct, any bet under £20 won’t qualify.

Please forgive my ignorance on this one, and maybe I’ve just missed something, but why do we have to incur a loss on the qualifying bets when we sign up to new sites? Is it because they only give us the free bets if we lose our first bet?
    Thanks.

You don’t have to incur a loss on your qualifying bets but you nearly always do.
The only way not to incur a loss is if you get an arb ( the lay odds are lower than the bookie odds) and then you will break even or make a profit. Don’t forget you’re paying commission on your winnings on your lay bets ( unless they have 0% commission offer on ).

Placing bets on arbs though is a sure way to get gubbed. (They stop your account receiving offers)

The outcome of the bet makes no difference as to whether you get your free bet unless it is a lost bet refund offer. For these types of offer you use the risk free calculator.
