Picking 2nd place horses

  • After doing about 15 of these ‘money back if 2nd’ offers in Paddy (and only getting that magical 2nd place twice) I wondered if anyone had any advice on selecting which horse to bet on?

I normally only bother with these when there are 5-10 runners and normally only where there are 2 clear favourites. Obviously I will also only bother with it if a decent match can be had, so a quali loss of £1.50-£2 or less.

Ps – I know very little about horse racing. Perhaps that is where I’m going wrong! Haha

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

What i do is i use an odds checker site that shows the movement of the market and then try and find one with odds that are falling so indicating that people are backing it. If not i tend to just back the favorite and hope it gets pipped. Ive done the PP offer everyday for the last two weeks and average to seconds a day so good profit overall.

You could do same horse with bet 365 offers, if appropriate,, then have a chance of first or second

I always pick the favourite, many a time they get pipped at the post or an outsider comes along to upset them

I tend to do the same offers on the same race, ie horse A with sky, horse B with Paddy and horse C with William hill. Of course its dependant on whether the odds are close enough but doing the three top favourites gives me a good chance one will come in. best I had was a 4/1 winner at Lads, 2nd at PP and 3rd at sky when they ran that offer!
(course that’s scuppered now I’m bonus banned at Lads and Wills)

Last week I participated in this promo, I placed 6 bets and two bets was refunded when my horse was placed 2nd. I received 50 pounds refund. Subsequently, on the same day, I was banned me from participating in any MBS promo. This ban is permanent, so gutted…

I’ve really caned this 2nd place offer at PP and made over £200 this month AND taken most of the MBS offers. I keep waiting for the gubbing email, but it hasn’t arrived….yet! Was banned at Lads after a couple of weeks despite losing every single bet, doing some mug punts AND and dabbling in their casino. Go figure There’s no rhyme or reason to it.

William Hill also do 2nd place refunds on channel 4 races, bets must be placed by mobile only to qualify. On Saturday I had bets with Hills, paddy, ladbrokes and skybet, all on the same race. Didnt win as the race had 12 runners, bot 1 up on another race later on, only 5 runners and had 3 selections, qualifying loss was 4.00 but made £22 from the free bet so £18 profit. Theyre definitley worth doing if you can get several bookied doing the same offer, and ideally less than 8 runners.

2nd Place refunds are a license to print money. I can’t emphasise that enough. If you stick to races with 6-8 runners – or less – take the shorter odds, and try to avoid qualifying losses of more than £1.50 per race, you really are going to make money in the long run.

My only caveat is to avoid the 2nd place refunds with strings attached i.e. ‘2nd to the SP fav’ or ‘2nd under a length’.

I find it takes a lot of time finding good matches for the horses, and there’s always a qualifying loss with no guaranteed return. I switched to the overlaying method(add 0.8 to the bookies) on the bet365 and Coral offers, and then I managed to get a couple of winners.

So I’m still trying to figure the best way to make the most of these offers.

This is why I don’t subscribe to the mug bet strategy – seems to be totally random as to who gets banned/restricted and who doesn’t

Sadly it looks like Paddy have reverted to money back only if 2nd to the SP favourite for December

Hi folks wondering if someone can help me here. I did the sky bet (money refunded if your horse finishes second/third) a few days ago. My money was credited as a free bet as per usual but has now dissappeared. Has anyone else experienced this or know if the free bet with these offers is time limited???
