question about each way place terms

  • About a week ago I placed an e/w ante post bet with fred for this weekends Clarence House Chase. The horse is Speredek, he was 66/1 with Fred which seemed good value as everyone else had him at 33/1 or 40/1 Obviously there is a bit of risk as it wasn’t a NRNB but seemed worth it.

Anyway in the time since I’ve placed the bet the number of runners has come down from 14 to 8 and everybody has Speredek at 20/1 or less. No liquidity yet but I’m hoping for the chance of a decent arb on both the win and the place come Saturday.

What I’ve noticed though is that oddschecker have the place terms for this race as 2 places at 1/4 odds. I’ve checked some bookie sites and they seem to be the same. Am I missing something here? My understanding is

    a) 3 places at 1/5 odds if there are 8 or more runners (it’s not a handicap).
    b) If the runners drop to less than 8 then it doesn’t matter as being an antepost bet, the place terms should be those available when the bet was placed (also there is no rule 4 deduction).

Would appreciate if someone could clear this up.

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

It looks like it’s turned out fairly well for you anyway.

I can’t see how your bet wouldn’t be for three places but you could always lay the two place market!

Yeah, very happy with result yesterday! I phoned up betfred before the race and they confirmed it was a mistake on the website and they would pay 3 places.

I shoved both my win and place stakes on the 3tbp market, hoping for a massive boom if Speredek pulled it off. Didn’t happen but still ended up with what I thought was a place arb of 14.2/2.1, then when I went into shop to collect they paid out at quarter odds for 2 places so became 17.5/2.1.

So on the phone they confirmed they’d pay three places and, in the shop they paid based on two places? That’s helpful.

Nice outcome…. good job it didn’t come third.
