Rule 4 in a nutshell

Sorry if this has been asked before, but could someone summarise Rule 4 in a nutshell?

I’ve been matched betting for a couple of months now, but only really been sticking to football because I’ve heard so much scare about Rule 4 on horse racing, I’ve just avoided it altogether.

In terms of matched betting, say I was to back and lay a horse, then Rule 4 was applied, wouldn’t it just cancel out?

If you back and lay at roughly the same time then it usually makes no difference.

For the B365 offer if you backed a horse at 4/1 and there was a withdrawal you’d miss out but again nothing particularly disastrous.

Plenty of good explanations of how rule 4 is applied if you try google.
