Sunbets are acting either incompetent or fraudulently
-
Sunbets have been running an advent calendar promotion where the first hundred or so people to enter a code will get a prize or another gimmick.
Today if you entered the code DOUBLE you’d get double winnings on an ascot race. I logged in just before ten so I’d be one of the first to enter the code and sure enough it was accepted! (if you’re not one of the first it’ll say sorry this promotion is sold out. So I was confident that I was one of the first hundred to enter and was amazed when my horse won at 17 to 1 odds; I can’t explain how excited I was I thought Christmas really had come early.
But nope :/ When trying to chase up my freebet I got through to a chat operative who said that I was not one of the first hundred because apparently, it’s only the first hundred to place your bet and not like their own terms and conditions say twice that it’s the first hundred to enter the code.
The whole thing seems really dodgy and I wonder if anyone actually won, but is there anything I can do?

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I’ll go for incompetent – have you seen how many erroneous free bets they dish out each week?! A few weeks ago they gave everyone a £100 free bet instead of a £5 or a £10 or whatever it was meant to be!
Due a free bet from them but can’t wait as long as the T&Cs say you should expect to? Get on live chat and they will credit it instantly, and then it will be credited again when the auto-crediting happens later on.
Hopefully you hadn’t layed off your 17/1 shot (at least not based on double the odds anyway)?
+0They àre incompetent, but……
I missed this but read about it in the new offers post where the conclusion was it was a bit vague, best to bet at same time as entering offer code and you wouldn’t know for sure until after the bet settled+0Unfortunately ‘Promo code submitted’ doesn’t confirm that you were one of the first 100 customers to enter the code, otherwise I’d say you have grounds for complaint.
I think it’s best that we leave these ‘First XXX customers’ offers alone as they’re not very transparent at all.
Feel free to submit a complaint to IBAS though if you want to take things further and have your case investigated…
+0Thank you for your reply! I never usually do these First XXX customers’ offers alone as they’re not very transparent at all. However in Sunbets case they’ve previously closed a promotion when the first hundred customers have been reached.
Also you’re right they haven’t understood their own terms and conditions the chat operative keep insisting that I was not one of the first hundred customers to bet and ignoring when I asked if I was one of the first hundred to enter the code. At the very least they were giving customers the impression they’d successfully entered the promotion/.
But then as you say nothing stops them saying I wasn’t one of the first hundred to enter the code. Would they have to turn over a list if I reported them to the IBAS?
+0When they previously closed the code it was AFTER, not dead on 100. Emphasising after as just because you hit the code doesn’t mean you were in.
You’re probably best to chalk this one down as experience. Even if the wording of first 100 is in your favour chances are there’s the standard cop out t&c which means they don’t have to honour it.
If you’re in this longer run you’ll probably face bigger battles….
Speaking of which can you comment on my smarkets post too Matt? Still seems to be an issue with some bets initially doubling up in value, but then settling correctly. Sods law (or a bigger issue) that the only one that double settled was my only losing bet+0NetBet did a similar promo a week or so ago, with the same outcome – it seemed like you had been accepted for the offer, but then they said that you didn’t qualify because you weren’t one of the first X to opt in AND bet.
Pretty sure the regulator would not look upon these favorably. For now though I will just steer clear of them.
+0The whole thing just took a turn for the weirder. I finally got a reply from them (only took a week) in which they said I had qualified.
“Our system has registered the promotional code you have entered as “invalid” and this is why you have not received your free bet automatically.
I have reviewed this and it is apparent that you followed the terms and condition correctly are eligible for this promotion.
Very sorry for the incorrect information given and the inconvenience caused by this.
In your account now is the £25 free bet owed to you.”
Only problem is the free bet should have been £85 and so I wrote back and actually got a reply this time.
“In this double your winnings promotion the maximum free bet was £25. So even though double your winnings was £85 the maximum free bet given is £25.”
Expect there was nothing about this in the terms and conditions imgur.com/a/sgx30
So again I explained this and sent screenshots and I just got this:
“This was highlighted on the page in Red. ‘Max free bet £25′”
They’re clearly not even reading their own terms and conditions. Sunbets have got to be the most incompetent bookie ever; however at least now they’ve admitted I was eligible and because the terms and conditions clearly don’t limit the free bet to £25 even the IBAS in all their incompetency and/or pandering to bookmakers have surely got to find in my favour.
