New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

2 big free bets for da big dog too!
+0Had an absolute shocker today….I placed my bet on the horse that won the race (or so I thought….) as it was just before the start of the race quickly put my lay bet on…when I went back to William hill the bet hadn’t gone through as the race has just started but my lay bet had been accepted….I tried to cash out to minimize damage but it wouldn’t let me…. the horse went on to win…lucky the lay odds were low at 2 but still ended up £24 down….how could I have sorted that mess out mid race….?
+0You could have placed a for bet at Smarkets whilst the horses were running, when you cash out this is effectively what you are doing. Given that it was the favourite and went on to win, chances are you would have backed at lower odds than you layed and so would have still made a loss. If you were confident it would win you could have backed a larger amount.
Lesson learnt though, always make sure your back bet is on and that your stake and odds are what you think they are before you place your lay.
+0Yeah I tried to effectively cash out (yes I’d have been down but it would have been better than £24!) I was going to try and lay another horse for roughly the same odds but the odds were going all over the place. Lesson learnt though, I find William hills odds are aggressively low on the favourite horses so trying to find a close back/lay odds to minimize ql can often only be done last minute.
On a side note I’d love to use smarkets but for some unknown reason they don’t offer PayPal…so I can’t…going to be going for a mortgage in the next 6 months so don’t want gambling sites all over my statement, limited to PayPal only sites at the minute.
+0Odd thing happened this morning….I put a £25 bet on a horse, no problem.
I then went to put a £25 bet on another horse and it wouldn’t let me saying I could only put £18.88 on….I thought I was stake restricted….
I then tried to put a £25 bet on another horse and it let me, is there any other reason I was temporarily restricted?
+0It probably wasn’t you that was restricted but the market.
+0Even though it was at the bookie (rather than lack of liquidity at an exchange) I hope so, I’d be gutted to lose William hill, been doing a few mug bets as well as placing accumulators…

Yep, bookie look to reduce their liability to. If you went back to bet the same amount on the same horse later in the day you will probably find your bet will be accepted, because at that point others will have placed bets on other runners.
+0Jonh don’t be too gutted as everyone will lose accounts after a few months fact
+0Yeah I’m aware of this, I’ve already lost a few, StanJames, betway and betbright but I’ve only just been doing the horse racing thing for a week or so, hopefully will get a decent amount of time to profit of it! Williamhill seems pretty decent with their offers, I wasn’t too bothered with the other accounts.
+0Also, you were placing bets very early in the morning. I always have issues getting bets on before 9am especially ew on long odds.
Betvictor dont let me place any bets on a horse thats 16/1 for example if its at 8am. By the time I arrive at work though, they let me do what I want.
+0Shame about the small fields at Plumpton today, its usually a course that is extremely profitable for this offer.
+0The 2pm race is looking great for ew arbing but very risky now that theres a non runner.
+0And theres another non runner, shame.
+0Agreed about Plumpton today Chris, looks average at best. Days before Cheltenham I’ve been smashing this afterwards it’s been a total horror show. Sad really when you consider it’s gonna end soon
