New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.
Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.
One advantage of getting bets on early is if horses drop out your lay odds and liability get reduced, I put an £18 bet (wouldn’t let me stake more) on ground under work at odds of 7.5 bookie and 7.2 lay, a load of horses dropped out, now the lay odds are only 5.77! If it wins I get £27 profit not including anything extra I’d potentially get on the William hill offer!
+0Um Jon did you lay at 7.2? If not then you need some maths to figure out the rule 4 deductions.
+0Betfair has recalculated my odds and lists my new lay bet at 5.77? With a liability of £90 (my lay stake was £18.88), plus the £18 I originally staked at William hill gives me total outgoings of £108. William hill is 7.5 x £18 giving me potential win of £135, so I either make my money back at the exchange or I’m £27 up at William hill, is that not correct?
+0Yeah someone needs to look up Rule 4.
+0My original lay was at 7.2 yes, then horses dropped out and Betfair recalculated my lay odds to be 5.77, at William hill my for bet is still 7.5.
+0William Hill odds are no longer 7.5. They may still show it as that but realistically Rule 4 is in play and your odds have decreased to around the same lay on the Exchange.
If it wins Hill will recalculate and pay you out at around 6.0.
+0@nfcmikey High 5 is gonna end soon? Where did you see this?

Ah, I thought only the exchange recalculated! How do I work out William hills reduction factor?
+0Think the horse was groundunderrepair? 3 non runners giving a combined 21% rule 4 deduction. Jon, your William hill bet will payout less, whatever you do don’t be tempted to lay more money at BF, if the horse wins you will have a shortfall.
Rule 4 is the most common occurrence in horse race betting, as others have said it’s worth reading and understanding it.
BTW, in another post you mentioned that you don’t use Smarkets because they don’t use pay pal and you don’t want to use your current account.couple of options, you can deposit with neteller or skrill or you could open another current account that you use only for your betting activity.
+0Ignore me, I’ve figured out how to out the new odds at William hill! Yeah it’s 6 and 5.77.
+0Thanks for that OrlandoSteve, the issue I have with neteller or skrill is to spend any of my profits it needs to go back into my bank account as nowhere accepts skrill/neteller, then I’d have to explain why I’ve got money from skrill and neteller going in. The beauty of PayPal is that now I’ve got a large float, my PayPal account is effectively a separate bank account that retailers accept so there is no PayPal activity at all on my current account and I can actually use my profits to purchase things.
Separate bank account is a great idea but I have a feeling when they credit check you for a mortgage it will show ALL bank accounts linked to you, then I’d have to produce bank statements and end up with the same problem.
+0Burger, it ends when the jumps season ends
+0Hopefully they will introduce something similar for the flat season… (maybe a shorter winning distance).
+0Just seen the many comments here…anyone need any advice for da big dog on rule 4 or are we sorted?
