Cheltenham fatalities.

  • Personally I had no idea racehorses were as much at risk as we saw at Cheltenham last week, I’ve never had any interest in racing till I did matched betting. I was sickened however and I’m really pleased matched betting is damaging to both the gambling industry and racing. I’d personally prefer it if the jockeys or owners broke their legs and were shot.

  • New to matched betting?

My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Aye, it was a bit of a rant mate and I wasn’t trying to imply that it was the fault of anyone on here.

Some years ago when attending a NH meeting at Ascot, I was I was watching from the landing side of the last fence.
The “scream” from the horse as it landed and was found to have broken a leg, will stay with me forever.
The whole process of the screens and disposing of the wretched animal led to my never attending a race meeting again and since that day I have never bet on horses or greyhounds

Before the trolls get at me, I use matched bettings on football and a little, but not much , on tennis.

If the same number of jockeys died, or were maimed, as horses, there would be NO national hunt racing

All the stories of how well horses are looked after is irrelevant – they are well looked after as a better cared for horse will perform better than an ill fed one !

The whole thing is summed up by the cretin who is clerk of the course at Cheltenham, who when interviewed on Sportstalk on Wednesday morning said
“There will always be casualties in elite sports”
It appears that no matter if the horse is maimed so long as the jockey is o.k., all is alright with the World.
    That is obscene
If we assume the Olympics to be the most elite of sports, I am not aware of any death to any athlete while participating
And in the Olympics Steeplechase, 3 miles, or a marathon, 26 miles, no-one takes a stick to beat a runner if flagging.

In a discussion on the banning of whipping, one of the leading jockeys said ” you need a whip to motivate the horse when slowing down after 3 miles in the mud”
To beat a horse when it is tired has to be wrong.
To treat horses as being expendable is wrong and those who say they “love” horses but still allow a 12 stone man to beat their horse with a whip as hard as he can so he may get more income from the prize money have very twisted minds
Horse racing is not a sport
It is a business where the horse , its traumas and pain, are there to provide “entertainment” ego boosting and profit.
The jockey does it from choice, the horse has no choice.
To say they are better treated than animals in the wild is another irrelevance.
That is an accident of nature, the racecourse sufferings are a by product of greed.

Well guys I’m just back last night from a great week down at the festival – 20 years plus visits now. Whilst this years horse fatalities were a shade higher than previous years – poss due to the ground quickening up as the week went on with the dry weather – the Cheltenham authorities, vets on course, overall supervision of all horse welfare etc etc make sure that the event is superbly overseen. Quite frankly horse fatalities are part of national hunt racing in particular – note point to point racing and hunting fatalities are part and parcel of these events too I’m afraid.
The on course and humane way these horses are looked after after life threatening injuries is second to none . If you saw the operation close at hand, with areas screened off , drugs administered etc it’s pretty impressive. The days of a horse getting shot to put it down are long gone.
All in all a very professionally handled event. Owners and stable staff who are close to these horses day in day out know the risks on ongoing basis. I’m afraid fatalities in horse racing and jumps racing in particular have gone on for centuries guys. Don’t think we can compare this with some of the animal cruelty which clearly happens in many countries abroad .- put it into perspective.

I wish I’d never posted this topic. Pleased though that others shared my concern at last week’s needless death’s.

no they just use silencers these days.

Its part of racing but dont post on the forum saying its superbly done. And what i ment earlier is most of these horses broken legs could be fixed with a lot of money and treatment but whats the point if the horse will never win any money again.

Suparhanz you need to get yourself along to a race meeting mate before you make some of your comments I’m afraid – wide of the mark I fear.
Maybe you should not bother with horses in your matched betting activities going forward? Emotions are kicking in.

I go to royal ascot every year and to sandown park and goodwood on a regular basis, love horse racing. I bet on it as a punter with great success, i also ride and live near some of the best stables in the country. I was merely pointing out that what you said was wrong and that the pistol is the usual racecourse execution method. The veterinary side of the racing horse world is based on how much it will cost to fix and the fact the horse will not race again, rather than whats best for the horse alot of the time.

kinda odd that people are using messed up things that happen all over the planet in order to justify the deaths of these horses.

No one is trying to justify anything but this is a matched betting forum. If someone has a problem with how/where they are earning their money from then just don’t do it or don’t complain about it. Simples.

I thought I had wandered into the humane society there for a second 🙂 Whilst no one wants these horses to die while jumping over fences inherently they are going to and always will and whether us few who use these forums bet on the horses or not will not make 1 iota of difference so while it’s nice to see a moral stand, it will make no difference. Much like if you decided not to eat from Mcdonalds to save the cows. The difference it will make is how much money you can make from match betting if you exclude a massive part of it, but that choice the same as every other choice is yours.
