Betfair Each Way edge
-
So I just noticed this gizmo.
On betfair when you are placing an each way bet you can adjust the terms if you want.
For example I can bet on Top Tug in Catterick 14:20 today odds 3.25. Standard place terms are 1/5 odds, 3 places.
This is almost value as you’re getting odds 3.25/1.45 for the win/place(3) on the bookie and the lays are at 3.7/1.27 on the exchange.
BUT
If I toggle the Each Way Edge widget to only pay two places then this will increase the odds to 4.33! Giving 4.33/1.67 for the win/place(2), where the lays are 3.7/1.59 (2 to place). Which is better value.
Maybe its something someone wants to look into, but at least at first glance on this example looks like you can stretch the value you get e/w arbing by using the edge.
Anyone use this feature regularly?

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I noticed it a few weeks ago but couldnt remember the reason I was put off. Perhaps it was something to do with possible rule 4 deductions? Not really a problem if you’re underlaying.
Likewise, with Coral they have a “Better win only odds” option available where you can get 0.5 or 1 increased odds on the win only part at least.
+0I suppose the problem is that you can’t really lay it. Betfair is the only place that I know that offer 2 to place market so that could flag up your account if you go to lay there.
+0I think thats how you have to play it, take the arb on the enhanced win price and leave the place price run as a value bet. A little riskier than a lot of the ppl on the forum might like to be.
And on your horse Culmination the edge doesn’t seem to throw up any additional value. So depends on a few parameters I would say for whether or not the value is there.
Yea, I like top tug. Went in to my betfair account to check the last horse I backed before I was gubbed (I kind of remember it was a bad e/w bet). But noticed I had a balance of €5.19. I have no idea where that came from because I would have emptied out my account when I got gubbed. Anyway long story short – I’ve had a punt on Top Tug with it – see if I can build €5.19 into something decent. Like you said on the other thread its about the only interesting race thats come up for me too today for ew arbers.
+0Yeah it is, not really holding out much hope for exchange activity especially on the win place but you never know, 3.50 Hereford woke up big time yesterday.
+0Urgh, looking at you lads talking makes me think I’ll never be able to get in to horse racing properly. All these difficult-to-understand phrases and stuff, can’t find nothing on the blog explaining horse racing for starters. EW Arbing looks like rocket science to me!
+1Tony I only got into horses through matched betting. Before that I knew probably as much as you know.
Read the guide on the forum for extra place races and do a few of those with small stakes.
Give it plenty of time. Months if you want. No need to rush into this, as far as I know bad each way races have been around as long as horse racing existed….

Its knowledge you gain over time Tony, dont try to walk before you can crawl.
+0I had this very same horse last night on Betfair, only I’ve done the edge the other way. I took 3.1 for 4 to be placed. So my place odds were 1.42
I’m basically trying to engineer an extra place for myself. The place odds have come in nicely, just hoping the win odds will come down a bit in the next hour so I can lay that too. It was more of an experiment for me really to see how it goes+0So it didn’t finish 4th. Ah well. This edge thing could be good if you know about horses and can see one that’s going to shorten. You can effectively create your own extra place races.
I’m some way away from that. I only took top tug because he was 3.5 at Betfair last night and 3.25 or lower everywhere else.+0Chepstow 13:40 – some good value there in general.
Playing around with the Each Way Edge I got Big Chip Ben @ 11/1 to place in top 4. The lay is currently 3.85.
Yeah the win price is way out of whack but I reckon it is worth about £6 profit for every £5 ew you stake.
Bet365 has a good win price for him.
+0Good spot.
Presiding is 33/1 with the edge factored. So 7.6 for top four. Yet trading around 2.1x!
+0If you bet on the sportsbook and lay on the exchange would it be classed as trading or insta-gub? Lots of value on this race
+0Is it likely there will be a non-runner here.
I’ve noticed sometimes the horses that have no hope don’t bother showing up!
The going is Soft if that has any bearing on whether there would be a non runner?
