Betfair Each Way edge
-
So I just noticed this gizmo.
On betfair when you are placing an each way bet you can adjust the terms if you want.
For example I can bet on Top Tug in Catterick 14:20 today odds 3.25. Standard place terms are 1/5 odds, 3 places.
This is almost value as you’re getting odds 3.25/1.45 for the win/place(3) on the bookie and the lays are at 3.7/1.27 on the exchange.
BUT
If I toggle the Each Way Edge widget to only pay two places then this will increase the odds to 4.33! Giving 4.33/1.67 for the win/place(2), where the lays are 3.7/1.59 (2 to place). Which is better value.
Maybe its something someone wants to look into, but at least at first glance on this example looks like you can stretch the value you get e/w arbing by using the edge.
Anyone use this feature regularly?

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

I know it’s probably in the thread somewhere but 33 pages aint looking good. How do you calculate the effective odds?
Also, as the edge basically cuts your account to shreds why not lay on the exchange. 17/9.6 and 4.2/5.5(2 place market)? Is that an option that’s been talked about before? – Edit, yes it has. First post first page. Ooops!
+0Well, you can do it quickly by entering 50p ew, that will give you the return based on a total bet of £1 and the return will be the (decimal) effective odds…
+0Also, you could lay off on the 2 place market as you say (but if the places get reduced on Betfair SB your bet would become win only, so that’s a potential issue)..
17.35 is showing as 4 places again..
+0Can’t believe I only opened this thread now. This is a goldmine! Sounds like i’ll be restricted soon, what sort of stakes and number of horses per race do people advice having done this a while?
+0When I started I was generally doing between £50 and £100 each way on as many horses as I could get good matches on. I probably managed that on 8 or 9 races before being restricted severely but, I think now they are quicker to restrict.
Personally, if I had another account and a big exchange balance, I would bet as much as my exchange could take today.. (and assume that the account would heavily restricted by tomorrow)..
+0I have an edge available and am trying to suss exactly how this works.
So can I guarantee a profit on this? Cannot quite get how you are calculating the effective win odds on a horse.
+0Im currently tracking the tin man in that race, hoping win odds drop to 6.6. Currently dropping to 3 places on the edge turns the win odds to 8.5 !! so place odds are 2.5, currently tracking the same as the exchange. Not sure if ive quite sussed it out but that a £500 E/w stake would return £132 guaranteed on the win, and a small QL on the place part if laying normally on sMarkets.

Still don’t get how to calculate the win and place odds. So it’s 8.5 as you say on the edge. There doesn’t seem to be a step by step example on here as to how to work out the back and lays on this. How do you get 2.5 on to place?
+0Taking Tasleet as an example in the 16.20:-
Select E/W and reduce the place terms from 4 to 2.
This will increase the odds from 8.5 to 16.0
50p e/w (total bet £1) will return £10 if the horse wins – the effective decimal odds on the win are 10.0.
You can lay the win at 9.2 atm, if you plug your total stake (ie £1 if you bet 50p ew) into Matt’s calculator and the effective odds of 10.0 and the lay odds of 9.2 it will tell you the optimum lay to guarantee a small profit.
Worst case scenario is you make a small profit but, if the horse finishes second you will win your lay and the place part of your ew edge bet = £££££££!
+0Thanks Mr Crispy.
How are you getting the effective odds of 10 though from the original 16? Just need to understand this part.
+0Scratch that. Got it. Cheers for the help.
+0El chico, earlier in this thread tennispunter gave a link to a spreadsheet he made, looks like it’s still there, maybe of use:

I find it quite useful, so cheers tennispunter for sharing it 🙂
+0Did you get on Tasleet Chico?
+0I got Tasleet but cannot believe that 17:35 result. Covered Hobson to win elsewhere and then Edge on the 3rd, 4th and 5th… painful to watch
+0Crispy … went Tin man ffs! Only consolation 25 free bet. Gutter though.
